Marriott San Diego nextgen is investing in hospitality and event leaders who continue to invest in themselves, and the San Diego State University Payne School of Hospitality & Tourism Management is proud to be connected to that effort.

Through a multi-year commitment led by Marriott San Diego nextgen fundraising leaders Vladimir Akselrud and Claudia Bonal, SDSU is able to support graduate students through academic and professional development scholarships. This year, SDSU awarded $15,000 in scholarship support to students in our Hospitality & Tourism Management and Meeting & Event Management master’s programs.

We’re grateful to the broader Marriott Business Council San Diego community for supporting these efforts and helping make continued education more accessible for professionals in our industry.

Special thanks to Vladimir A., Claudia Bonal, and the Marriott Business Council San Diego community for supporting hospitality and event leaders who are continuing to grow, lead, and strengthen the future of the profession.

It's bittersweet, but we wouldn't have it any other way... the Class of 2026 have officially graduated!

Our annual Senior Send Off was such a special night — filled with great energy, heartfelt speeches, and a whole lot of well-deserved celebrating. Watching these students walk through our program and grow into the professionals they are today never gets old.

To the Class of 2026 — we are so proud of you. The hospitality industry is lucky to have you, and we can't wait to watch what you do next. Congratulations! 🧡

Global Meetings Industry Day is a good reminder of why meeting matters.

It’s where alignment happens.
Where decisions take shape.
Where people connect in ways that shift what comes next.

We see this during our on-campus weeks, when students come together, share ideas, and grow through the experience.

It’s not just about understanding the industry.
It’s about learning how to lead in the moments that matter most.

Sharing a short clip from our GMID video with MPI.

Last Thursday, representatives from On Location LA28 visited our students to share insights on the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Students had the opportunity to connect, network, and engage in meaningful discussions about all things Olympics. It was an incredible experience and a valuable opportunity to learn more about LA28 and the exciting events ahead.

Thank you all for taking the time to speak to our students!

What an amazing way to close out the Spring semester!

This past Tuesday, our students had a chance to enjoy lunch with Magen Bentley from Hilton Corporate and Neena Maneklal, HR Manager at Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. It was a great chance to connect in a personal setting and gain valuable industry insight.

Later in the day, we were excited to host representatives from Hilton San Diego Bayfront, Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, DoubleTree Mission Valley, and Hilton University Relations at our “Hiltons of San Diego” Fair. We’re incredibly thankful to the leaders from these local properties who dedicated their time to engage with our students, share their journeys, and open doors to future career opportunities.

The evening wrapped up with a special honorary guest lecture from Linda Hilton, Chair of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation’s Board Executive Committee. She shared meaningful insights into the Hilton brand’s rich history, core values, and future vision, leaving a lasting impression on our aspiring hospitality professionals.

We’re truly grateful to Linda Hilton and all of our Hilton partners for their ongoing support and commitment to shaping the next generation of hospitality leaders.

What an incredible way to wrap up the Spring semester!

This past Tuesday began with a special opportunity for our students to enjoy lunch with Magen Bentley from Hilton Corporate as well as Neena Maneklal, HR Manager at Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, creating a more personal space to connect, ask questions, and gain industry insight.

Later in the day, we had the privilege of hosting representatives from Hilton San Diego Bayfront, Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, DoubleTree Mission Valley, and Hilton University Relations at our “Hiltons of San Diego” Fair. We’re truly grateful to the leaders from these local properties who took the time to engage with our students, share their experiences, and open doors to exciting career opportunities.

The evening continued with a special honorary guest lecture from Linda Hilton, chair of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation’s Board Executive Committee, who offered valuable insights into the rich history, core values, and forward-looking vision of the Hilton brand. Her perspective was both inspiring and impactful for our future hospitality professionals.

We sincerely appreciate Linda Hilton and all of our Hilton partners for their continued support and commitment to developing the next generation of hospitality leaders.

What an experience at the inaugural Mosaic L.E.A.D.S. Conference in Philadelphia! 🎉

We were proud to send 12 Payne School students to represent SDSU alongside our director, Carl Winston, who serves on Mosaic's advisory board. Over three days, our students engaged in professional development sessions, heard from industry leaders, and built connections with peers and executives from across the hospitality industry.

Mosaic's mission — to create a hospitality industry that reflects the full mosaic of talent and experience in the workforce — is one we deeply believe in, and we're proud to be part of this community from the very beginning.

Thank you to Mosaic Hospitality Association and all of the sponsors who made this possible. We can't wait to see what's next. 🧡

A great panel at Marriott's NextGen Business Council meeting at The US Grant this week! We were proud to have representation from the Payne School. The discussion sparked a great conversation around AI in hospitality — from its current impact to the exciting opportunities it presents for guest experience and operational efficiency.

A big thank you to Douglas Korn, Josef Eberhardt, and Ira Vouk for sharing their expertise, and to Vlad Akselrud for organizing such an engaging event. Staying connected to the industry is at the heart of what we do.
