🎬On Monday, Nov. 9, join USD Law’s Consumer Protection Policy Center for a special screening of SHUFFLE, the award-winning documentary by filmmaker Benjamin Flaherty.

Taking an unflinching look at America’s addiction treatment industry, SHUFFLE follows three individuals navigating a system where getting out safely can be as difficult as getting in. The film explores the human impact of a system shaped by insurance, profit and policy, while highlighting stories of resilience and survival.

Stay after the screening for a panel discussion with Flaherty, renowned addiction researcher A. Thomas McLellan and Marcus Friedman, administrative director of the Consumer Protection Policy Center.

🌟Today, we are shining a spotlight on Distinguished Alumni Award honoree Robert H. Gleason '98 (JD), who will be recognized at the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony and Luncheon.

Robert exemplifies exceptional leadership and business acumen, serving as Evans Hotels' first non-family President and CEO and directing strategy for premier properties including The Lodge at Torrey Pines, Bahia Resort Hotel, and Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa. While helping shape San Diego's hospitality and tourism industries, he has chaired the Los Angeles Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, and the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Robert remains deeply committed to USD School of Law, where he co-founded and supervises the pro bono Name and Gender-Marker Change Clinic.

At the USD School of Law Entrepreneurship Clinic, students gain hands-on experience helping entrepreneurs navigate the legal considerations involved in building and growing a business.

Under the supervision of an experienced attorney, students work directly with clients on matters such as business entity formation, financing, agreements and intellectual property protection. In the process, they develop practical transactional skills while helping San Diego entrepreneurs better understand their legal options and establish a strong foundation for their businesses.

For USD Law student Khalid Kurdi, the clinic offered an opportunity to put concepts from corporate and securities law into practice with real clients. Working one-on-one with entrepreneurs, he gained experience handling matters ranging from entity formation and equity issuances to trademark assistance and other corporate needs.

“You’re being part of a journey to help a client become more successful,” Khalid said.

Through experiences like these, students learn to identify clients’ needs, evaluate options and risks, and translate complex legal issues into practical guidance, building confidence and preparing them to apply the law beyond the classroom.
