Happy Indigenous People's Day!
The history of indigenous people in the Americas and worldwide is often erased from popular culture and media. It is our duty as people living upon unceded indigenous land to acknowledge the history, struggles, and incredible contributions of native peoples. We encourage everyone reading this post to take their time to learn about the people native to the lands that they call home.
The organizations Front And Centered, CIEFA, San Diego County Office of Education, and so many more offer free resources for people to learn more about indigenous Americans. San Diego alone was home to many groups: the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Cupeno, Kumeyaay, and Northern Diegueno.
"Indigenous" refers to the people that inhabited a place prior to colonial contact. These groups often adapt closely to the land they occupy, developing their culture in direct relationship and response to the nature that they rely upon for their basic needs and survival. There is great diversity among native American groups with hundreds of recognized groups and even more groups that have yet to be acknowledged federally. As we fight for equity and justice, we must not leave our indigenous brethren behind.
