University of San Diego: Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies The Kroc School is leading change through peace education. Our graduates have the courage to lead change locally and internationally. The Joan B.

Kroc School of Peace Studies is dedicated to advancing the field of peace studies and a world-view of peace as human development. The school nurtures and disseminates interdisciplinary scholarship and advanced practice to educate and prepare peacebuilders. Our school is home to a dialogue and a discipline of scholars and practitioners immersed and educated in peace as philosophy, methodology and creative act. Bringing peace and justice studies to life on the University of San Diego campus requires active engagement in peacemaking through education, research and dialogue with practitioners. Our vision for the school is to be a nexus of dialogue and engagement, drawing together practitioners, theorists and academics, as well as religious and laypeople, American and internationals, professionals and volunteers, frontline activists and recent college graduates. They inform, challenge, support and inspire each other with the idea that peace can be imagined and built. The school draws on the capabilities of its active institutes and programs. The Trans-Border Institute (TBI) works with the people who live on both sides of the busiest border crossing in the world, to conduct research and inform effective policies for the border region. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ) continues its vital work to offer both expertise and dialogue to frontline peacemakers and a concerned community on the subjects of conflict resolution and human rights. We train our graduate students with the knowledge and skills they need to address some of the world’s most complex challenges. Our newly revised Master of Arts in Peace and Justice Studies prepares students to build peace in many of the world’s conflict-ridden regions. Joan Kroc understood that this is a time of great danger and great possibility. A new type of institution is required to educate the peacebuilders of the 21st century. She wanted to build an institution that would be engaged fully - to “not only talk about peace, but make peace.” With Mrs. Kroc’s generous endowment, we are working towards this goal.

For over four decades, Davis has used dialogue and human connection to engage with people involved in white supremacist groups.

Through these conversations, he has built genuine friendships across deep divides, and in many cases, those he engaged with have ultimately left their movements.

His story is the subject of the award-winning documentary Accidental Courtesy and his book Klan Destine Relationships. His TEDx Talk has reached more than 13 million viewers, and he has received numerous honors for his work bridging divides.

What an evening! 🎉 Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Corporate Reckoning Book Event with Professor Sarah Federman, PhD.

Sarah’s talk on accountability and reckoning in corporate America sparked a powerful conversation with Professor Tara Ceranic Salinas, PhD, and the audience Q&A brought even more thoughtful perspectives into the room. We loved seeing so many of you leave with a signed copy of Corporate Reckoning in hand.

A special thank you to our volunteers, staff, and faculty who helped make the night come together — and to everyone who stayed for the reception to keep the conversation going over w**e and hors d’oeuvres.

If you missed it, keep an eye out for Corporate Reckoning — it’s a must-read for anyone thinking about ethics, accountability, and leadership. 📚

The Kroc School is proud to celebrate the 2026 Cohort of San Diego Community Scholars Fellows 💙

Thanks to the continued generosity of Rosemary and Michael Perlmeter, this fellowship keeps growing — empowering eight more students and local leaders to pursue graduate degrees in Conflict Management & Resolution or Social Innovation at the Kroc School. This opportunity allows them to take the knowledge gained in the classroom and apply it directly to their ongoing work within the San Diego community. ☮️

With this second cohort, the Perlmeter’s continued support is helping cultivate an even stronger network of local leaders working to build a more peaceful and innovative San Diego.

🎬 Cinema Sin Fronteras / Film Without Borders

A free three-film series exploring how Hollywood has imagined the U.S.-Mexico border — as a line to be policed, a perilous journey to be survived, and a place where justice breaks down. All screenings in SOLES 102, Fridays, 12:15–2:00 pm.

🗓️ Border Incident — Sept 18
Anthony Mann’s 1949 noir, made with the U.S. Immigration Service, on the exploitation of undocumented Mexican farm laborers by smuggling rings.

🗓️ Touch of Evil — Oct 16
Orson Welles’ 1958 border noir on corruption, prejudice, and the clash between a corrupt U.S. officer and an idealistic champion of due process in Mexico.

🗓️ Sin Nombre — Nov 13
Cary Joji Fukunaga’s 2009 debut follows Sayra, a young Honduran girl, riding the freight train “La Bestia” north with her father and uncle — a visceral look at Central American migration and gang life.

Each film sheds light on complex, controversial issues, while also drawing on tropes and stereotypes of the border and migrants that persist today.

Co-sponsored by Copley Library, the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, and the Program in Latin American Studies (PILAS), College of Arts & Sciences
