BART Paper Ticket Fashion Show Features Academy of Art University Students’ Designs

BART is saying farewell to paper tickets with a runway fashion show featuring dozens of outfits made out of a variety of BART paper tickets by San Francisco Bay Area fashion design students.

Come support the Academy of Art University School of Fashion stydents participating in the show this Saturday September 14 at Rockridge BART station parking in Oakland.
This is a free event with a live DJ, stage and runway, models, judges, step and repeat, and a BART stamp rally. The show starts at 1pm.

Vote for our alumna Alex Flores, BFA Fashion Design’2024, participant of the International Student Design Competition by “Real Leather. Stay Different” (RLSD) and ArtsThread. She described her project “El Cuaco: The First Saddle”as a representation of her family traditions:

“El Cuaco is the name of the first horse I ever rode. He was my grandfather’s horse and together they ignited my interest in working cattle and riding horses. My deep attraction to leather comes from my family’s generational love for cattle farming, horse riding, and Mexican western aesthetics. The inspiration for this project is an old leather saddle I found in my family’s barn in Mexico.
I used the saddle to inspire some drapes and paired those with my dad’s suede poncho. The poncho is decorated with contrasting suede appliqués and designs by burning.
On my last trip to my family’s farm, my great-uncle began teaching me how to rope cattle. I am very inspired by the lasso (rope) and incorporated it through fringe and ties. Together, those items helped me design a suede coat-like poncho that fastens at the neck and chest and is decorated beautifully. This design represents my family and my deep love of cattle and horses.”

The Sails of Growth
B.F.A. Fashion Designer Joey LeDoux’s collection is an ode to his father and grandfather. A native of Vancouver, Washington, LeDoux comes from a family of builders and engineers with military backgrounds. It was vital to find a way to incorporate this family history into his work. “The military influence that created [my grandfather] also created me, but in a very different way,” said LeDoux. “My grandfather used to sew all of his sails; ironically, now, I’m building them.”

The Sails of Growth
Despite the fact that he had no prior experience building sails and parachutes, these are Joey LeDoux’s collection main focal points. He found local stores to source his fabric from and used the creative concept skills learned at the Academy to hand-quilt various materials. He utilized hues of biscotti tan, khaki green, cremes, and coppers.
LeDoux stressed that repurposing is essential for him, but bringing in new textiles is also critical for a collection to be high-end in his eyes. “It’s all about showing how much I can do and how many materials I can work with,” he explained. “I used foam lifejacket insert pieces that I had to upholster to make it work for a garment. I’m using cut-andsew knits, wools, all quilting by hand. I’m using ripstop in itself as fabric. When you use old and new beauty, you’re taking history and bringing it to today.”

Loving Threads
Joyanne Li’s desire to be a fashion designer sprouted when she was five years old. She always liked drawing and making clothes for her dolls. Her mom suggested, “Maybe you could become a fashion designer when you are older.” For Li, that was her first time hearing those words. Ever since then, her passion has been for fashion. Li was born in southwest China. After moving to the United States, she worked in the fashion industry for a few years.
Li drew inspiration for her collection from her personal life, basing it on the relationship between mother and daughter. Li’s daughter’s growth and behavior inspired her to create something that reflected the changes and challenges of parenting.

Loving Threads
The design process behind Li’s collection involved dividing shapes and reuniting them. “I think the process of change is a metaphor for the changes that happen in a connection between a mother and a daughter,” she said. Li took a photo of her and her daughter hugging, cutting the human shapes, then sewing the shapes in the form of a misaligned heart for a unique silhouette. “You can’t see the hug, but the hug is in the design,” shared Li.

Loving Threads
Li’s collection features dresses, skirts, and two-piece sets to show the feminine aspect of a mother and daughter, while also using flowers in the shape of a mother’s breast. Li used “comfortable, soft, and stretchy fabrics” to realize her designs, including neoprene scuba—a stretchy material—so it can fit various body types. Additionally, she used more structured fabrics like faux leather to achieve the silhouette shape she wanted.
For Li, fashion design is not just a profession but a personal journey of self-discovery and self-expression.
“Fashion design, to me, is a mirror that reflects my true self,” she said. “At 43, I am still on a quest to understand myself better.”
Li’s collection is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of a mother-daughter relationship. Her design process, infused with personal experiences, breathes life into each piece, making them unique works of art.

Mahjong Muse
Huanyu “Nina” Liu, originally from Beijing, China, ventured to San Francisco to pursue her passion for fashion design. Initially, San Francisco’s bustling streets left her with mixed feelings, but the city’s captivating architecture stole her heart. What began as a desire to explore soon transformed into a profound connection with her surroundings, leading Liu to discover the vibrant art scene thriving within the city. Driven by her newfound admiration for San Francisco’s creative atmosphere, Liu embarked on her journey toward a bachelor’s degree in fashion design at Academy of Art University.
In her third year at the school, Liu is confident in her chosen path. She reflects on her decision with pride, recognizing the valuable knowledge and skills she has acquired. Her enthusiasm for fashion design is palpable, especially when she discusses her design inspirations, each crafted with care and passion.

Mahjong Muse
Liu draws inspiration from her travels, viewing them as opportunities to immerse herself in diverse cultures and experiences and allowing her to infuse her designs with authenticity and originality. Her thesis collection is inspired by Mahjong, a traditional Chinese table game. She collaborated with Mengshan Wei, M.F.A. Textile Design, on prints for her collection.
In her academic pursuits, Liu takes pride in her achievements: her stellar grades, research endeavors, and extracurricular activities. Beyond the classroom, she actively engages in community service and volunteer work, recognizing the importance of giving back and fostering connections outside academia

Mahjong Muse
M.F.A. Textile Design student Mengshan Wei relocated to the Bay Area from China to pursue undergraduate studies in fashion design. After graduation, she transitioned to studying textile design at the Academy.
“During my graduate studies, I learned more skills such as styling and knitting. These make me feel very satisfied and happy,” said Wei about her time at school. Wei’s research on hundreds of years of Mahjong helped her incorporate the origins of Mahjong culture.
Through an understanding of how each pattern is produced and what each of their symbols and traditional colors represents, the game informed her designs. She used the discharge technique to process the fabric, dyeing it and printing with chemicals selectively removing the dye, then proceeded with screen printing her original designs. “I wanted to break away from designs that just repeat the patterns that Mahjong itself has,” shared Wei. “So I deconstructed many Mahjong patterns.”

Bridging Two Cultures
M.F.A. Fashion Design student Nadine Waack’s collection is a unique blend of Brazilian and German influences. The men’s tailored garments used throughout the collection are a nod to her German heritage, with their structured design and professional appearance. Waack’s Brazilian side shines through when she deconstructs these garments and transforms them into exuberant, sexy silhouettes. Her ability to play with different textures, colors, and patterns has helped her harmonize the two cultures beautifully.

The Outcome of Self-Protection and Comfort
Waack, who considers herself a perfectionist, decided to take a step back for this collection and allow the garments to arrange themselves. “I tried to let the garments speak to me so I could understand what they wanted to do instead of controlling or forcing the materials,” she explained. This approach enabled her to gain inspiration and generate fresh ideas during the design process, resulting in a distinct touch to her creations.

With a B.F.A. in Dance and Arts Management under her belt, Alysia Chang will once again take the stage with her M.F.A. Fashion Design collection as her mix of passions walks the runway for the Spring Fashion Show. Boards of her imaginings and racks of in-progress creations in the School of Fashion’s graduate studio show her love of dance. “It started at a young age before I could really form solid thoughts around why,” said Chang. “You know when you love something deeply?” She tears up and says, “Gosh, that’s ridiculous. I can’t even talk about it. I think the second I saw dance, I felt myself dancing; it just felt right.”

Chang’s career signature focuses on the form and shape of the human body. Dance and design aside, her passion is to emphasize what she finds beautiful and allow others to taste that beauty. She deeply values all things art and aspires to become part of a collective celebrating all aspects of art: theater, music, food, opera, film, etc. She hopes to land at a brand where her unique eye is appreciated, whether it is in ready-to-wear or luxury. Nevertheless, Chang refuses to limit her options for the future: She hopes her viewers will stand by for the short film featuring her graduate collection at the Academy.

For her senior thesis collection, BFA fashion designer Crystal Garcia @selenag20_ @stalciadesigns drew inspiration from The Simpsons. Growing up, The Simpsons was Garcia’s favorite cartoon to watch as she enjoyed the colors, characters, humor, and life lessons. BFA fashion designer Olivia Rocquemore @eiramaivilo’s senior thesis collection celebrates non-binary folx who will not allow themselves to be placed into a box.
