The San Francisco Film School is a nationally accredited educational institution specializing in the training and development of film and media professionals. Since our inception, we have dedicated our school to the re-imagination of the film school model and to building a more creative and educational environment. From her very first screenplay in our classrooms to being named one of only four filmmakers selected for the 2026 NewFest New Voices Filmmaker Grant in partnership with Netflix, chosen from more than 500 applicants, Star Amerasu is proof that the stories you start here can take you anywhere. 🌟

The grant recognizes bold, emerging LGBTQ+ voices in film, and it comes on the heels of After Hours, the short film Star wrote, directed, and starred in, executive produced by Elliot Page, which has carried her work to film festivals around the world.

“One of the most impactful classes was screenwriting. I’ll always remember the first semester and Fred teaching us about conflict and resolution in scripts. That very first short film script we wrote has taken me to film festivals around the world.”

Star does it all with her work as an actress, DJ, and producer. She wrote, directed, and starred in the short film After Hours, executive produced by Elliot Page, and has taken the stage everywhere from Off-Broadway to emcee’ing for Chappell Roan.

Congrats to you, Star. Finding your career direction in this industry is what we do. Congratulations from all of us. 💫

Cherry’s path to where she was not a straight line. Business analytics degree, corporate analyst job, then to our school to get the chance to pursue storytelling. That detour led her into Product Tech, and eventually to Warner Bros. Discovery.

In her role now, she builds and analyzes data and AI behind WBD’s streaming platforms, the systems that connect audiences to what they’re recommended to consume on HBO Max, Discovery+, and Bleacher Report.

“While filmmakers create the content, my job is to help audiences discover it.”

Two main mentors stuck with her: Fred Ritzenberg, who taught her story structure through screenwriting, and LorenGraves, who put her on a real commercial shoot with a RED camera for the first time. Her biggest takeaway was that any production is a team sport and trust is necessary to make any time work.

Her advice for students: “Don’t assume your path has to be a straight line.”

Her job is to analyze data behind WBD’s streaming platforms, the systems that connect audiences to what they’ll will watch and get recommended on HBO Max, Discovery+, and Bleacher Report.

“While filmmakers create the content, my job is to help audiences discover it.”

Two mentors stuck with her: Fred Ritzenberg, who taught her story structure through screenwriting, and Loren Graves, who put her on a real commercial shoot with a RED camera and green screen. The biggest Takeaway for her was that any production as a team sport and forward it to work you need total trust in your teammates.

Her advice for students: “Don’t assume your path has to be a straight line.”

Saturday we opened our doors for a night of real conversations, behind the scenes looks at our production studio, and a panel packed with insight for anyone thinking about a future in film.

From green screen demos to Q&A with faculty and alumni, it was a room full of people who are serious about the craft, and we loved having you in it.
