University of San Francisco Department of Biology

University of San Francisco Department of Biology The Department of Biology offers a program designed to prepare students for a broad spectrum of care

Biology, the study of living organisms, is wonderfully dynamic and diverse. Students experience at first hand the excitement of working with faculty to test theory against experience in the classroom and laboratory. Students may come to our department because they envision lives as educators or health providers, or because they want to understand more fully our environment in this complex and mutable world.

A warm welcome back to our students, and congrats on your first week of returning to campus! We're so glad to see you in the halls and in class, back in labs and out and about on campus, and exploring the new updated spaces in Harney... all with a renewed sense of the importance of understanding biology! Cheers!

Check out this article on an outbreak of Salmonella from raw cake batter. Aside from the usual interesting bits, note that the CDC used Whole Genome Sequencing to determine that separate incidents of Salmonella infections from across the country came from the same bacterial strain.

In August 2018, two Oregon patients with diagnosed Salmonella infection reported having eaten raw cake mix.

Great photo and story from the Monterey Bay Aquarium

Hula-la! 😍 This crystalline creature is a hula skirt siphonophore (Physophora hydrostatica), and is actually made up of many individual animals called zooids, each with a different part to play. The finger-like zooids, colored with beautiful tinges of orange and violet, attach at the base of the swimming bell-shaped zooids, and house relatively potent stinging cells that can impart a strong sting to a potential predator or unsuspecting prey 😈🍴Thanks to our colleagues at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) for the stunning image!
