In 1945, alumnus Wesley Johnson brought Juneteenth to San Francisco, helping create a lasting tradition that continues to honor African American freedom, culture and community today. A student leader, entrepreneur and trailblazer in the Fillmore District, Johnson’s legacy reminds us of the power of celebration, resilience and civic leadership.

For SFSU’s Ann Chamberlain Artist-in-Residency, Paola de la Calle will collaborate with our students to create “Alternate Atlas,” an exhibition in the Fine Arts Gallery reclaiming maps as spaces of imagination, resistance and memory.
