2026 Spring Symposium Reboot | June 6 & 7 | San Jose State University (OTAC 2-Day OT Education Symposium)

A reboot of OTAC’s Spring Symposium for the northern California OT community will be held at San Jose State University this June hosted by no other than the SJSU Occupational Therapy Department! 🥳

The Symposium features 4 tracks, 21 sessions, 32 presenters representing seasoned experts and emerging voices, and an opportunity to earn up to 12 PDUs.

The American Occupational Therapy Association and the American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTA/AOTF) has announced the 2026 Institute for Future Scientists in Occupational Therapy at the recently held AOTA Conference (April 24-25, 2026) in Anaheim, CA. They have “connected 30+ occupational therapy students with leading occupational therapy scientists to discuss topics such as opportunities in OT science, considerations when evaluating potential doctoral programs, and career opportunities as a scientist.” (AOTF post)

And so, we are also putting a spotlight on another one of our SJSU OTD students, Kimberly Nguyen, who has been selected as one of the recipients. Congratulations, Kimberly!! We are very proud of you! 🤩👏👏👏

The purpose of the Institute is:
(1) to identify potential scientists in entry-level education programs;
(2) to connect potential entry-level scientists with mentors in the occupational therapy scientific community; and
(3) to develop a peer network.

The SJSU OT Dept. is putting a spotlight on Shelbey Kellogg, one of our OTD students who went, learned about and advocated on OTAC Advocacy Day for one of OTAC’s priority legislative bills that impacts the profession of occupational therapy and/or the clients that we serve. All the participants participated in legislative visits with legislators and/or their key staff members.

This is what we mean when we say our OTD program is dedicated to preparing culturally diverse occupational therapy leaders who promote health and participation in life for individuals, organizations, and populations through engagement in occupation.

The SJSU OTD program, which was launched in Spring 2023, is designed to develop occupational therapy leaders, advocates, and innovators with a clear focus on community engagement and social justice for underserved populations.

SJSU OT Alumni in the News 👏👏👏

Last year, Sydney Shiroyama (MSOT 2017 alum) made a life-changing choice. She decided to enter the first level of ordination to become a Buddhist priest. She came back from Japan with several other touchstones in her life—the arts and community health and well-being. It’s expressed in The Lantern Song, and also her lay work as a pediatric occupational therapist focused on early intervention for babies and toddlers with disabilities. She helped start the Silicon Valley Down Syndrome Network (SVDS), a group of affected families under the umbrella of the Valley Health Foundation. She has brought taiko drumming to children and adults with mental health issues, and presented research on the benefits of taiko for people with Parkinson’s Disease. Music, she has found, can be a very efficacious therapy mode.
