The SJSU School of Music is excited to welcome Dr. Laura Bock as an Assistant Professor and our Area Coordinator of Music Education!

As a young musician, Bock grew up in central Maryland where she was an active member of her high school band and orchestra programs. She completed a double concentration in music education and flute performance at James Madison University and a master’s degree in Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin.

From 2011-2015, Bock taught 5th and 6th grade band at Walker Upper Elementary School in Charlottesville City Schools and served as the District XIII representative to the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. She also performed with the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra as a 2nd flute and piccolo player.

Between 2017 and 2022, Bock was the assistant band director at Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park, Kansas as well as its associated elementary and middle school feeder schools where she worked with students in grades 5-12. She was also a co-conductor for the first Wind Ensemble program of Harmony Project KC which provides free music instruction to youth in the Kansas City Urban Core. She was recognized as the 2020-2021 Outstanding Young Music Educator for eastern central Kansas. Bock enjoys working with a variety of students across different musical content areas and age levels.

Step into “Sonic Canvas: A Journey Through Sound and Art,” a free, one-of-a-kind experience at the San José Museum of Art! This interactive event brings together San José State University faculty, guest artists, and students to perform a dynamic range of music in conversation with the Museum’s permanent collection gallery, Tending and Dreaming: Stories from the Collection.
The program kicks off with a chamber music prelude by SJSU students, followed by an interactive performance of contemporary music and poetry. As the performances unfold, you are invited to engage creatively by writing and reflecting on the art and sound around you.

📣TOMORROW: STORYTELLERS
-
Music comes alive as a narrative in Storytellers, featuring the SJSU Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. David Vickerman and Dr. Grant Knox. Each piece paints its own vivid tale, from the open landscapes of Howard Cable’s Saskatchewan Overture to the bustling streets of Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Florence Price’s The Old Boatman offers gentle nostalgia, while Gala Flagello’s Bravado brims with bold energy. Lauridsen’s Contre Qui, Rose speaks in quiet poetry, paving the way for the evening’s centerpiece—Lindsay Bronnenkant’s Tarot, a compelling and imaginative exploration of archetypes and fate. Together, these works invite audiences to step into worlds of adventure, memory, and mystery.  Joining us for this concert is the Delta College Symphonic Band, under the direction of M.J. Wamhoff.
-
This event will take place TOMORROW Friday, May 1st at 7:30PM in the SJSU Concert Hall.
