From a Speech by Grace Lee Boggs I’m a very old woman. I was born in 1915 in what was later known as the First World War, two years before the Russian Revolution. And because I was born to Chinese immigrant parents and because I was born female—I learned very quickly that the world needed changing.…

Subject: Fwd: Volunteers Needed for Journey To Success Fair on November 3!

Hey, fellow Spartans!

I hope this message finds you well. I want to share with you an exciting event taking place at SJSU on November 3rd, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 2p.m. in the Student Union. During this time, the university will host its first Journey to Success College Fair targeted for Asian American & Pacific Islander middle and high schools students and their families. This event is a collaboration among the CSU Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Initiative, the City of San José and the Santa Clara County Office of Education, and supported by other community based organizations.

The goal of the AAPI Initiative is to improve college access and graduation achievement for AAPI students from underserved communities. Our college fair will provide families and students with basic information about college preparation, planning and financial aid. Attendees would also have the opportunity to meet representatives from CSU campuses to learn about college options and the college application process.

We are looking for student leaders and volunteers (bilingual is a plus!) to help us out with this event, and we personally want to invite you to be a part of it! We ask that volunteers meet us at 8 am upstairs in the Student Union on Saturday, November 3rd. If you or anyone in your organizations are interested in volunteering for this event, please sign up at http://tinyurl.com/sjsuvolunteer as soon as possible. Name tags will be given to volunteers during sign in, so please sign up if you're interested.

What should volunteers expect to do:
1. Direct people to appropriate rooms
2. Help set up for lunch
3. Be present in break out session to assist presenter (handout materials, light translation, etc.)
4. Distribute lunch
5.Most importantly translate if you can!

We will inform you with more details as the date approaches. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to let us know. Thank you in advance for your initiative to get involved in your community. We look forward to seeing you on November 3rd!
