Faculty-Led Programs (FLPs) are SJSU credit-bearing courses taught abroad by SJSU faculty for 2-3 weeks. Students travel in cohorts to their program location, taking a course focused on a particular theme while immersing themselves in the local culture.

Volunteer 15 hours per week with a local non-profit while immersing yourself in Thai culture — visiting Buddhist temples, an ethical elephant sanctuary, and Hill Tribe villages along the way.

About this Program: Cairns, Australia
Travel to Cairns to look at patterns of rainforest and cultural destruction as an example of what is happening all over the world, studying the impact of environmental degradation and creating your own research projects using Adobe Spark and Premiere Rush. Highlights include learning traditional food preparation and an overnight immersion camping experience with Aboriginal guides, a Great Barrier Reef service project with snorkelling and data collection, and visits to a bio-dynamic dairy farm, wind farm, and outback cattle station.

About this Program: Costa Rica
Primarily for matriculated graduate students in the EDCO program, students will learn about and reflect on issues of community and cultural development, international and cross-cultural issues, sustainability, community development and human service, and human rights and citizenship education. Based in the San José area and the biodiverse Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat in Sarapiquí, students will study resilience at an NGO that provides job-training, leadership development, and mentorship to women impacted by ultra-poverty, and study marginalized communities utilizing a strengths-based framework.

Study comparative law and Spanish legal systems firsthand — with courthouse visits, bar association meetings, and dialogues with Spanish legal professionals — while exploring Seville, Cádiz, and Córdoba. Language of instruction is Spanish.

Prerequisites: Two years of Spanish (SPAN 1A/1B and SPAN 20A or 25A/25B OR Spanish Placement Test Score of 550 or above and instructor evaluation) or instructor consent

Explore past and present, local and global society and culture across dynamic Japan — from Tokyo’s high-tech mass transit and Akihabara’s pop culture to Kyoto’s historic temples, sumo culture, and the rainbow quarters of Shinjuku. Students will also visit Mount Fuji’s snowy winterscapes, ride the Shinkansen to Yuzawa Snow Country, tour Kyoto’s Doshisha University, and explore the historic cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

What is a Faculty-Led Program?
Faculty-Led Programs (FLPs) are SJSU credit-bearing courses taught abroad by SJSU faculty from various academic fields for 2-3 weeks. Students travel in cohorts to one or more program locations.

During the Winter Session in January, students take a course focused on a particular theme and learn about the local culture. Courses range from 3-4 units and several programs satisfy graduation requirements; most programs are open to all majors.
