A plane ticket can take you almost anywhere, but not everyone has the same access to opportunity.

Cal Poly students explore how disparities in global air travel reveal broader challenges tied to geography, economics, infrastructure and equity. The project shows how engineering and data can help us better understand the systems that both connect and divide our world.

How much of the struggle still needs to belong to the student?

As AI gets better at writing code and debugging problems, Cal Poly engineering faculty are thinking carefully about what students still need to experience for themselves.

Their conversations get at the heart of Learn by Doing. AI may lower barriers and open new possibilities, but working through mistakes can help students build the judgment they will need as engineers.

Cal Poly engineering students are setting their sights on Mars.

The team behind Poly1Rover has an ambitious goal: develop an affordable rover capable of exploring another planet. Students are building a mission control system and testing how to operate a rover from hundreds of miles away, all while learning what it would take to prepare their prototypes for space.

The effort is now growing into the proposed Cal Poly Space Innovation Club, bringing students from across engineering together around a shared mission.

Meet the students behind the rover and see how they hope to move it closer to Mars.

California has 120 state lawmakers. My Legislator helps you follow the two who represent you.

The personalized CalMatters newsletter turns a flood of legislative activity into weekly updates on your state senator and Assembly member. Behind that seemingly simple experience are Cal Poly professor Foaad Khosmood and alumnus Andrew Chan, who helped build a system now reaching more than 12,000 subscribers.

Ahead of Cal Poly AI Day on Oct. 22, read how they are using technology to make state government easier to understand — and more personal.

What does it take to design a better roadway?

For Cal Poly’s Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) student chapter, it meant months of research, collaboration and applying classroom knowledge to a transportation challenge. The team developed a roadway design that balanced safety, mobility and constructability while gaining practical experience that reflects Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing philosophy.

Their hard work paid off with a second-place finish in the Transportation Design Competition, helping Cal Poly earn first place overall.

In the words of one Cal Poly Cares grant recipient: “I am incredibly grateful for the financial support provided by donors and supporters of the Cal Poly Cares fund and program. It has helped me stay enrolled in college and provided me with the resources I need to strive academically and professionally.”

Entirely funded by donors, Cal Poly Cares provides immediate financial support to students facing unexpected hardships. You can help ensure that all Mustangs stay on the path to graduation — today and for years to come — by supporting the Cal Poly Cares endowment. Once we raise $25,000, a generous Cal Poly parent donor will donate $50,000 to the Cal Poly Cares endowment — tripling your gift!
