Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Plant Science Department Welcome to the Plant Science Department page! Or Follower. In the HCS Department, we don’t just sit in a classroom. We get our hands dirty. And we sweat.

We are a department within the College of Agriculture, Food, & Environmental Sciences at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo. As young people interested in the wide-open world of horticulture, there are two paths we can choose: Leader. While the industry needs both to succeed, the Horticulture and Crop Science Department at Cal Poly prepares us to be industry leaders. We’re out in the fields, groves, greenhouses, nurseries, and arboretum. We soak up the life-giving California sunshine. It’s all designed to give us the knowledge, skills, and experience it takes to make a real difference in the world. While doing this, we learn the science behind the practice. We discover real-world solutions. We collaborate with leading edge industry professionals. And -- of course -- we have fun and make life-long friends. Through it all, we unlock a broader spectrum of possibilities than we ever thought possible. All this occurs in an environment where we sit down and discuss our interests, our challenges, and our dreams with an extraordinary professor who cares about our success. A person who’s not just our professor, but our advisor and mentor.

“We are ready to be leaders, and HCS helps us to make it happen.”

Cal Poly Horticulture and Crop Science. Learn. Do. Lead.

It’s been a FANTASTIC year at the Crops Unit! We want to highlight several of our amazing on campus units over the next two weeks. Of course a few pictures can’t capture all that the Crops Unit does, but this is a snapshot! We can’t wait to see the great work continue over the summer and into next school year!

WOW! Dr. Perry is holding a painting done by a former PLSC 110 student, Sarah Kula. She painted a photograph taken by Dr. Perry of a newly discovered species of wasp, Zagrammosoma headricki, named after Dr. Perry’s first entomology advisor, Dr. David Headrick. “These wasps are important natural enemies that help control concealed pests species, such as leaf miners, leaf rollers, and gall makers” - Dr. Perry. What a wonderful work of art, and tribute to a fabulous discovery!

PLSC students Maya Peña, Shaelyn Spencer and Haley Kost have spent the last few years immersing themselves not only in coursework but in internships and clubs on campus. And thanks to industry contributions they attended Cultivate earlier this month alongside Dr. Steinmaus and PLSC Advisory Chair Rachelle Antinetti

Huge thank you to Frantz Wholesale Nursery, LLC Sunridge Nurseries Inc. and Blackmore Company for believing in these students and investing in their growth.
