From Mustang standout to Hall of Famer — and Cal Poly professor! 💚💛

Congratulations to Assistant Professor in the Food Science and Nutrition Department Anna Cahn, who was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame as part of its 2026 class.

One of the top all-around performers in Cal Poly softball history, Cahn is the only athlete in Big West history to earn both Pitcher of the Year and Field Player of the Year honors. A two-time NFCA All-West Region honoree and four-time All-Big West selection, she remains among the program’s career leaders in pitching and hitting.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Cal Poly, Cahn became a registered dietitian nutritionist and earned master’s and doctoral degrees. Today, she is an assistant professor in Cal Poly’s Food Science and Nutrition Department, inspiring the next generation of Mustangs.

🔬 Celebrating student research across CAFES!

Each summer, the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences sponsors dozens of students from all 10 departments to take part in a 10-week undergraduate research program. Working alongside faculty research leads, students explore topics within their fields of interest and share their findings at the annual CAFES Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.

This year’s research ranged from identifying a surrogate organism for citrus washing, to using computer vision for targeted vineyard spraying, exploring nutrition students’ perceptions and food choices, and characterizing beef cattle grazing behavior at Swanton Pacific Ranch.

Thank you to the students, faculty mentors, community members, and industry partners who came together to celebrate the innovation, curiosity and hands-on learning happening across the college. 🌱

We loved welcoming the California FFA State Officers to Cal Poly! Our CAFES Ambassadors showed them around campus, where they connected with former State Officers, Dean Horgan, faculty and President Armstrong. They also explored our campus units on the Agventure Tour Bus, enjoyed Cal Poly Creamery ice cream and toured Yosemite residence halls.

At Break-A-Wave Beach Rodeo, two worlds come together: the sea and the Western way of life.

Produced by Outriders, this one-of-a-kind rodeo showcase and fundraiser brings top collegiate rodeo talent to Avila Beach. It is a celebration of breakaway roping and saddle bronc riding, the Central Coast and the community that supports Cal Poly Rodeo and student success.

Proceeds help provide opportunities, resources and scholarships for student-athletes — supporting their success in the arena, in the classroom and beyond.

We are saddened by the passing of George Wurzel (Plant Sciences, ’86), a respected agricultural leader, proud Cal Poly alumnus and longtime supporter of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.

George worked at the Cal Poly Farm and Farm Shop throughout his four years as a student before building the cattle operation at Swanton Pacific Ranch. He went on to spend four decades with J.G. Boswell Co., retiring earlier this year as president and chief operating officer. Throughout his career, he remained closely connected to Cal Poly through service on the CAFES Dean’s Advisory Council.

The George Wurzel Plant Sciences Building — named in his honor through a donation from the JG Boswell Company and newly opened to students this fall — will carry forward his legacy for generations of Mustangs.

The George Wurzel Scholarship https://giving.calpoly.edu/GeorgeWurzelScholarship will continue his lasting impact by helping future students pursue an education in agriculture—an enduring tribute to his hard work, humility, integrity and leadership.
