Over the weekend in Santa Fe, Dr. Heather Smith and Dr. David Kilby, and six graduate students presented research at the 2026 Paleoamerican Odyssey Conference, an international conference hosted by the Center for the Study of the First Americas!

Center for Archaeological Studies Receives Additional Funding for Veterans Curation Program

The Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) at Texas State University has been awarded an additional $336,411 from South Associates, Inc. to support the Texas State University Satellite Veterans Curation Program (VCP) FY27. Funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the project will continue providing paid employment and professional training opportunities for military veterans while advancing the preservation of archaeological collections.

The award will fund four student veteran positions and support returning assistant lab managers Rob Curran and Katharine Lukach. Under the leadership of Amy E. Reid, Curator and Assistant Director of CAS, participants will receive hands-on training in data management, technical writing, photography, digital imaging, and scanning technologies. The program combines workforce development with cultural stewardship, enabling veterans to build transferable career skills while helping preserve archaeological collections and records for future generations of researchers, educators, and communities.

Doctoral student Myriah Allen (advised by Britt Bousman) and doctoral student Emma Giacomello (advised by Michelle Hamilton) are recipients of the 2026 Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award. This $1,000 award helps active Phi Kappa Phi members fund post-baccalaureate professional development pertaining to their graduate studies. Emma Giacomello is the sole national recipient of the named Margaret and Peter Dzwilewski Love of Learning Award, established in 2025, which recognizes a top-performing student across any discipline who exemplifies lasting curiosity, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Dr. Kate Spradley has been named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow for her work identifying and repatriating the remains of migrants who have died along the Texas-Mexico border.

The prestigious fellowship, often referred to as a "genius grant" is awarded to 20-30 exceptionally talented and creative individuals per year. Each fellowship comes with an $800,000 “no strings attached” stipend to be used by the awardee as they see fit. According to the MacArthur Foundation, the fellowship "is an investment in a person's originality, insight, and potential."
