Meet this week’s spotlight, Karla Juarez Gomez! She graduated from CSUSM in 2021 with her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. 

Q: What have you been up to since graduation?
A: “Since graduating from CSUSM, I’ve continued pursuing opportunities that allow me to make a meaningful impact in my community. My career began in community mental health, where I worked with children and families navigating complex challenges. That experience strengthened my passion for helping others access the resources and support they need to thrive as individuals and a family unit. Today, I serve as a Senior Student Services Advisor, where I’ve discovered a passion for higher education. Every day, I have the opportunity to guide students through their educational journey, develop campus events that foster student engagement, and build meaningful relationships that remind students someone believes in them and is rooting for their success! Some of the projects I’m most proud of include coordinating our campus’s first Share the Love: Community Care Day, helping establish a student pantry, and creating initiatives that foster a more welcoming and supportive campus community. Outside of work, I’m a proud mom who believes learning doesn’t end after graduation. Whether I’m reading, exploring new places, or continuing to grow professionally, I strive to keep my curiosity alive. Looking back, I’m grateful for the foundation CSUSM gave me, and it’s incredibly rewarding to now help other students discover the opportunities that education can create!”

Meet this week’s spotlight, Kenneth Starkey III! He graduated from CSUSM in 2025 with his bachelor’s degree in Art, Media and Design.
 
Q: What have you been up to since graduation?
A: “Since graduating I’ve been building my photography portfolio and recently have returned to CSUSM as a Student Success and Retention Specialist in the Black Student Center.”
 
Q: What’s an experience from your time at CSUSM that made a lasting impression on your life?
A: “Switching my major to Art, Media and Design. I really found a true passion of mine in photography and I have enjoyed every bit of my journey pursuing it.”

Meet this week’s spotlight, Jasmine Perez! She graduated from CSUSM in 2011 with her bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in sociology.
 
Q: What have you been up to since graduation?
A: “I graduated in 2011 and since then I’ve been in the field of social work, earning my Master’s in Social Work from SDSU and becoming licensed. I am excited to share that I’ve launched my solo private practice. I’m the owner and therapist of my solo private practice in Escondido, where I provide therapy to adults navigating anxiety, burnout, family expectations, boundaries, and life transitions. My work is especially focused on helping first-generation adults and those navigating the complexities of cultural identity, family relationships, being the one for a lot of ‘firsts’ in their family. Building my own practice has allowed me to create a space where clients can slow down, reflect, and better understand what they need—not just during a crisis, but as an investment in the life they’re building. Q: What’s an experience from your time at CSUSM that’s had a lasting impact on your life?
A: “My time as a student at CSUSM was full of opportunities and new experiences. As a first-generation student, I learned that not having a roadmap doesn’t mean you’re not capable of finding your way. I learned to trust myself, ask for help, and create my own path. That lesson continues to shape me personally and professionally.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Beyond the Bachelor’s: Exploring Graduate School at CSUSM! In celebration of National HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution) Week, this special event highlighted alumni experiences and pathways to graduate education. 📚

Shoutout to our amazing panelists, Amandah Altamirano, Estrella Ordonez, and Jose Guerrero Cibrian. We appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedules to share your higher education journeys with our CSUSM students and alumni.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the 5th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb! We’re grateful we were able to reflect with our community as we tackled the stairs together.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our partners Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans Services CSUSM, ROTC, and CSUSM Campus Recreation. And of course, thank you to the San Marcos Fire Department for joining us at this event! We appreciate all you do for our community. Dr. Darshana Patel , Kevin Shin, and Maria Nunez - thank you for your support.
 
A special thank you to the Cohn Restaurant Group for generously providing gift cards to Draft Republic San Marcos to the first 100 participants to check in.
