Dresden’s 4-H Journey

This page will follow Dresden’s journey into the world of agriculture. As we transitioned from being an Army family and returned back to our agricultural roots Dresden seized the momentum and selected the hardest 4-H project available, raising a show steer. We traveled to College Station, Texas, and met Dr. Andy Vestal, Texas A&M University, who showcased his outstanding Charolais stock for us. Dresden selected “That’s Platinum” from the herd and a month later we brought Platinum home with us. Dresden has had to manage daily food/water consumption, balance the amount of feed/hay to achieve the desired weight gains, maintain a clean and safe pen, and has had to teach Platinum how to be led with a rope and halter.

The fair system here is different than anything that we’ve ever experienced as the child’s family is responsible for acquiring donations towards the sale of the 4-H project prior to the show/sale. On the day of the Cattleman’s Sale a pre-designated purchaser will represent all of the donors, as well as the family, by purchasing Platinum with all of the donations. This is our first year back in the world of agriculture and we definitely appreciate the help with donations made through the Cash App website link. The donations will go directly towards the sale of Platinum, pay for this year’s expenses as Dresden learns to balance his accounts, and will hopefully provide enough support to purchase next year’s steer project.
