Rap or Rapta?: Music and Dissent in Urban India

Join our CAH faculty fellow, Supurna Dasgupta (English) for a screening of the celebrated Bollywood film, Gully Boy. At this movie screening we will witness how joyful music-making forms communities of dissent and solidarity in India. As we watch this film, we will think about how new forms of popular music can dissent against social inequality and injustice. What kinds of new men and women are shaped through these communities? Which global artistic networks do they align themselves with and how?

Since their founding era, Americans have periodically tried to convince their northern neighbors to join the Union, sometimes by force. This talk will offer a sweeping survey of the prospect (or threat) of the American annexation of Canada. It will highlight major turning points in a relationship long touted as a model for peaceful coexistence between neighbors. Extending the focus through the ongoing trade war, it will examine how Canadian politicians and opinion-makers have long harnessed fears of annexation for political purposes.

As Earth, Wind & Fire asked, "Do you remember the 21st night of September?" Well, at the Center for the Arts and Humanities we hope you do because it's the first day of classes! Welcome back, Broncos! A new academic year holds so much optimism and possibility, and we're excited to begin with you all.

We were busy this summer and are delighted to share all the fun events we've got planned for the next few weeks. Before we do that, we ask you to check out our summer blog where faculty and staff shared their own personal experiences with joyful rebellion. It's still summer, but it's not too early to sign up for our annual CAH Pop-Up Event in celebration of national arts & humanities month! In past years, attendees have had the opportunity to participate in the arts and humanities in various ways, including sharing their favorite lines from a piece of writing or music, taking digital photos with friends, painting rocks, designing tote bags, creating beaded bracelets, and writing original flash writing pieces alongside campus creative writers. We look forward to all these and more in 2026.

This is a fun opportunity to learn more about the activities your peers, and friends are involved in, and in the process, learn more about the arts and humanities at SCU! It's also a fantastic opportunity to advertise upcoming events or meetings for your own organization and increase your visibility at the beginning of the year.

The Pop-Up will be held on Friday, October 23rd from 11am-3pm on Benson Plaza and Alameda Lawn A.
