Students and faculty from SCU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry traveled to St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA on May 6 to attend the annual Northern California Undergraduate Research Symposium (NCURS). This annual event, being reinitialized after a COVID-linked “pause,” featured oral and poster-style presentations by Chemistry and Biochemistry students from Universities in the Silicon Valley, Sacramento, and California sections of the American Chemical Society. SCU student researchers from the laboratories of Professors Steven Suljak, Benjamin Stokes, Grace Stokes, Amelia Fuller, and Paul Abbyad made oral and poster presentations. In addition, Professors Linda Brunauer, Benjamin Stokes, and Steven Suljak attended the event, providing support and encouragement for the talented undergraduate and post-bac presenters.

We wanted to share this website with an update from Prof. Larry Nathan (https://chem.utah.edu/news/lawrancenathan.php). Larry worked as a professor at SCU beginning in 1970 along with Profs. Joe Deck, Bill Sheehan, Bob Pfeiffer, and Mike Sweeney. Larry's Ph.D. came via the University of Utah's Chemistry Department who featured him their Alumni Magazine. Enjoy! After graduating from the University of Utah Department of Chemistry in 1970, Professor Lawrence Nathan had 33 years of devoted career in chemistry at Santa Clara University, located in the heart of Silicon Valley in California. He retired in 2003 and currently holds the title of Professor Emeritus.

Dr Paul Abbyad and his team have just published a peer-reviewed research paper in the journal Micromachines titled "Droplet Microfluidic Technology for the Early and Label-Free Isolation of Highly-Glycolytic, Activated T-Cells." This paper presents a passive method to isolate T-cells with the strongest activation, an important subset of cells for study or use. The technology does not rely on the display of surface markers and thus enables T-Cells to be separated in minutes rather than hours after activation. SCU co-authors are Claudia Zielke (Inclusive Excellence Postdoc), Adriana Gutierrez Ramirez '22 (Chemistry), Maya Ryan '23 (Public Health Science and Biology) and Azam Gholizadeh (Inclusive Excellence Postdoc). Collaborators Kelsey Voss and Jeffrey Rathmell, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, provided expertise and guidance in immunology and immunometabolism.
