That’s a wrap on a record-breaking 37th annual Summer Engineering Seminar! 🎉

This summer, 72 high school students were selected from more than 1,800 applications, the most in SES history. Our participants represented 53 cities, 68 high schools, five countries, and 13 states and territories. More than half of these students identified as first-generation college students.

While living on Santa Clara University’s campus, participants were paired with SCU Engineering student mentors and explored multiple engineering disciplines through hands-on workshops, robotics prototyping, collaborative projects, design competitions, and activities focused on innovation and social impact.

Their experience extended beyond the classroom with visits to Intuitive, Samsung Semiconductor, and the Verizon Innovation Lab; guest speakers from STMicroelectronics and the SES alumni community; and opportunities to build lasting friendships, including a Bay Football Club game for our Year-Two cohort’s social night! ⚽

Throughout the program, students strengthened their technical knowledge while developing leadership, teamwork, communication, and professional skills and discovering how engineering can create sustainable solutions for communities around the world.

We can’t wait to see what these students accomplish and how they carry their experiences at SCU into their education, their communities, and the world. 🌎

Thank you to Samsung, Southwest Airlines Verizon, Inspector Planet, and the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, along with our SCU partners: the School of Engineering, Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, SCU Inclusive Excellence Division, and Miller Center for Global Impact. Your support makes this transformative residential program possible.

🚀 Every engineer starts somewhere.

For some of our alumni and students, that journey began with the Summer Engineering Seminar (SES). Through hands-on projects, mentorship, and immersive engineering experiences, SES helped spark a passion that eventually led them to Santa Clara University.

As we prepare to welcome our returning Year 2 SES students next week, we're celebrating a few SES alumni who were once in their shoes. We can't wait to see where this next chapter takes this year's cohort.

🤖 AI learning is on the menu at Santa Clara University!

Recently featured in Inside Higher Ed, this open-access initiative gives students, faculty, staff, and community members a welcoming place to gain hands-on experience with the AI tools reshaping a wide range of fields.

Launched this spring by Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Kai Lukoff with co-faculty advisors Yi Fang and Sanjiv Das, AI Kitchen offers weekly, “code-light” workshops focused on practical exploration and critical engagement with emerging technology.

For computer science and engineering student and Studio Lead Tiffany Le ’28, the experience is about more than learning AI; it’s about building a community where people from all backgrounds can learn, experiment, and grow together.

🏒 Earlier this month, Team Puck Pulse brought home the Innovator Award at the NHL/NHLPA/SAP/Sharks Foundation Innovation Competition!

Congratulations to Anna Mulderink, Alejandro de Ana Skinner, Liam Hadden, and Fletcher Craig for designing a more immersive game-day experience for fans with visual impairments using NHL EDGE puck-tracking technology. The team presented their award-winning solution at the SAP Center in San Jose. 👏

The competition brought together more than 150 students from 14 colleges and universities across the Bay Area. Only six teams advanced to Final Pitch Day, and three were from SCU: Puck Pulse, Little Saigon, and The Rink Reach Program.

This achievement reflects the creativity, collaboration, and commitment of our students to solving real-world challenges through engineering.

As we prepare to celebrate Commencement tomorrow, we're reflecting on some of the meaningful traditions that mark the transition from student to professional engineer. 🎓⚙️

Last week, members of the Santa Clara University engineering community participated in the Order of the Engineer ceremony, accepting the Obligation of an Engineer and receiving the Engineer's Ring, a symbol of their commitment to integrity, responsibility, and ethical practice.

The ceremony serves as a reminder that engineering is about more than technical expertise. It is a profession grounded in service, accountability, and a responsibility to use knowledge for the benefit of society.

🎉 Congratulations to all who participated in this year's ceremony. We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our graduates and the entire School of Engineering community during Commencement weekend.
