What stories are hidden beneath our feet? 🌿 🌴

Students are uncovering layers of history through campus archaeology tours started by Professor Lee Panich. From a 2,500-year-old Ohlone village beneath the center of campus to collaborations with local Indigenous communities, the tours encourage students to see familiar spaces in a new way.

By exploring archaeology, storytelling, and community research, students begin to see that history is woven into the spaces we walk through every day. 📜

✨ 🎭 For Christian Barnard ’26, political science and theater have always gone hand in hand. One explores how institutions can change the world, while the other shapes culture and the way people connect with one another.

At SCU, Christian brought those interests together through leadership in the arts, research in political science, and work with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. Whether on stage, in the classroom, or in the community, his time at Santa Clara was shaped by curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to meaningful change.

Double major Christian Barnard ’26 explored political systems and cultural expression, finding meaning in both.

On June 3, come by the Music Recital Hall at 12pm for a conversation about the performance. Meet the artists and learn about the newly commissioned work by Guggenheim Fellow Nicolás Lell Benavides ’10.

On June 5 at 7:30pm at the Music Recital Hall, experience the World Premiere for Bowed Piano! The piece is performed on the original 9-foot Baldwin bowed piano, gifted to Santa Clara University by the family of renowned composer Stephen Scott (1944–2021), whose pioneering work with his own ensemble transformed the possibilities of the instrument. Now under the care of 2024–26 Frank Sinatra Chair in the Performing Arts Teresa McCollough, the instrument finds new life in this collaboration. Benavides joins McCollough and the SCU New Music Ensemble as both composer and performer, honoring Scott’s legacy while carrying the bowed piano into a new era of performance.
