Sports in the Bay Area rarely stays inside the lines of the field, and this fall we're recognizing the people proving it. Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business has teamed up with the San Francisco Chronicle to launch the inaugural Bay Area Sports Business Awards, honoring leaders using the business of sports to make an impact beyond the scoreboard.
Five categories. Finalists chosen by a judging panel from across the sports and business community. Instead of a cash prize, each honor comes with a sponsor donation to a charity or to a scholarship fund for our MS in Sports Business students.

What if the key to finding the right career isn’t knowing exactly what you want — but knowing what you don’t?

From working at a Computerland store during Silicon Valley’s early days to leadership roles at Cisco and eventually co-founding his own analytics company, Leavey alumnus Jim Hughes has built his career around one guiding philosophy: start by eliminating.

His journey offers lessons on career pivots, human judgment in the age of AI, and why being useful may matter more than chasing the perfect title.

Why did the U.S. step in to support Japan’s yen — and what could it mean for global markets?

Leavey Professor of Economics and Associate Dean Helen Popper spoke with The Media Line about the economic forces behind the yen’s recent weakness, from the U.S.-Japan interest-rate gap and carry trade to the limits of currency intervention.

As Professor Popper explains, without changes to underlying monetary conditions, intervention alone may have limited lasting impact.

First it was 'tokenmaxxing' – burn through as much AI as possible. Now boardrooms are asking what they actually got for it, and engineering teams are being told to budget every token like a limited resource.

The NYT digs into the whiplash hitting companies that treated AI adoption as a race instead of a strategy – with insight from Leavey's own Ram Bala, professor of Information Systems & Analytics, on why putting a value on AI use has become so difficult to pin down. Leaving companies to grapple with the question: what's the ROI on intelligence?

👉

A new field of “tokenomics” has emerged to measure the return on all the money companies are pouring into artificial intelligence.

Since WWII, an estimated 100,000 Nazi-looted artworks remain unrepatriated – not for lack of information, but because it's buried across thousands of disconnected archives.

Three Leavey School of Business professors – Michael Santoro, Haibing Lu, and Michele Samorani – are building an AI tool that searches this fragmented data in plain language, helping researchers surface art that may have been stolen. Their first prototype, built on Jeu de Paume museum records, is already turning up answers, including which pieces went straight to Hi**er.

Student Spotlight: Meet Ryan Pool '27

For Ryan Pool, Leavey is more than a place to study business—it's a place to build.

A Finance major from Denver, Colorado, Ryan was drawn to the Leavey School of Business for its commitment to technology, innovation, and business for the common good. Since arriving on campus, he's embraced opportunities to create his own path, from conducting independent research on philanthropic ecosystems to helping build ventures through organizations like Ryndel Labs, Santa Clara Ventures, the Bronco Venture Accelerator, and Alpha Kappa Psi.

One of Ryan's most memorable experiences at Leavey has been designing his own directed research course, allowing him to dive deep into topics at the intersection of finance, networks, and social impact. For Ryan, that flexibility—and the people who support it—are what make the Leavey experience unique.

His advice to future Broncos? Build, create, and explore what excites you. When you're surrounded by a community that empowers you, there's no limit to where your ideas can take you.
