Please join us for the opening reception of SLOW FICTION, FLASHING NOSTALGIA, the 2026 School of Art Post-Grad MFA Show at the Reef this Saturday, Oct. 17, from 5–8 pm.

SLOW FICTION, FLASHING NOSTALGIA brings together new work by the 2026 MFA graduating class of CalArts in the departments of Art, Photography and Media, and Art and Technology. The exhibition takes its title from two ways of experiencing life in a state of transition: “slow fiction” describes the deliberate speculation of the future against the accelerated pace of contemporary life, while the “flashing nostalgia” refers to the memories retrieved in quick succession, with little time to linger.

SLOW FICTION, FLASHING NOSTALGIA unfolds through the work of Hao Chen, Yunhsuan Cheung, Nic Cruz, Al Dawson, Cheyenne Echo, Kiko Gio, Kyle Hartin, Schuyler Hazard, Richard Howard, Angie Emily Joseph, Sol Kang, Niema Lightseed, Quinn Matthews, Lily Milburn Rutledge, Bryan Morello, Jiyu Oh, Rebecca Poarch, Rb Poodle Moran, Michael Rose Coomers, Vincent T***a, Noel Waldron, Daniel Wang, Isabella Yates, Danny Young, Jason Zeng, Francie Zenner, Qiqi Zhou, and Susie (9) Zhu. Curated by Nahui Garcia.

Happening alongside the post-grad show will be the inaugural CalArts Fall Biannual, featuring additional art exhibitions, live performances, and immersive presentations by artists-in-residence, Gaines Fellows, CalArts MFA postgraduates, alumni, and faculty. We hope to see you there!

A quick rewind to the 2026 Electronic Experiments in Sound Festival that took place in The ROD last month. It’s exciting to see the innovations that manifest when exploring the possibilities of contemporary electronic music, experimental composition, sound art, improvisation, and emerging performance technologies.

Join us for the closing day of the Gaines Fellows' group exhibition, SHAPING INHERITANCE, at The Reef on Saturday, Oct. 17. Enjoy an afternoon of conversations bringing together artists, curators, and the Charles Gaines MFA Fellows to think through artistic inheritance across generations, practices, institutions, and ways of making.

Here’s the programming schedule:

• 1–1:45 pm | INHERITANCE: Featuring CalArts Faculty Emeritus Charles Gaines and former School of Art Faculty Cauleen Smith, moderated by Gaines Fellow jeffrey martín (Art and Film/Video MFA 25).

A conversation about artistic practice, teaching, systems, institutions, Los Angeles, and what artists receive, transform, refuse, and pass forward.

• 2–2:45 pm | CURATING INHERITANCE: Featuring School of Film/Video Faculty Jheanelle Brown and jeffrey martín.

A conversation about what becomes visible when eight distinct practices are brought into relation, and the possibilities of curating, interpretation, and exhibition-making.

Leonardo Pirondi’s (Film/Video BFA 22, MFA 24) FRACTAIS TROPICAIS (TROPICAL FRACTALS) screens at REDCAT tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 14.

FRACTAIS TROPICAIS (TROPICAL FRACTALS) depicts environmental collapse and a vision of the post-apocalyptic world. Shot in Super 16mm, Pirondi’s debut feature film crafts a textured analog visual world in contrast to slick, digitally rendered science fiction visual tropes.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Leonardo Pirondi and Ivo Müller moderated by Jheanelle Brown.

ATTUNE, a short dance film co-created by Dana Yoon (Film/Video MFA 26) and Stephanie Zaletel (Dance MFA 26, BFA 12), won Best Dance Film (Short) at the Berlin Indie Film Festival in July.

Set in the California desert, the film pairs the expansive landscape with the movements of two dancers, shot in richly saturated color with an ethereal score by jonnine. Zaletel developed the concept and worked on choreography with Cody Brunelle-Potter; Jiaqi Yu (Film/Video MFA 26) was the colorist.
