Today is the last day of , but at SFCC we recognize and champion our student parents all year. To celebrate this final day of the month, SFCC student parent Nicole Ortiz shares her perspective:
"My experience as a student parent has been nothing but amazing. When I first started considering coming back to SFCC, I was nervous, scared, and overall concerned about what it would be like to balance being a student and a parent.
I was intrigued when I heard about the College Ready event for student parents, where parents could receive support and guidance to return to school. Unfortunately, things came up in my life, and I wasn’t able to attend. At that point, I started thinking that maybe going back to school just wasn’t meant for me.
Thankfully, I was able to connect with the Student Parent Success Program coaches, and they helped me get started with a helping hand. They supported me through the process of registering for classes, setting up a meeting with an advisor, and applying for financial aid.
Most importantly, they helped me apply for childcare and childcare assistance. Having access to reliable childcare has made it possible for me to focus on my education while knowing that my child is being cared for.
The support I have received has given me the confidence to continue my education and work toward becoming a better parent and a better version of myself. I am truly grateful for the Student Parent Success Program and everything they have done to help me reach this point."
