We had a really wonderful screening/Q&A of the documentary “I Paint Monsters” at CMD last night!

The SMC Film Production Program would like to invite you to a screening/Q&A of “I PAINT MONSTERS,” a short documentary by Ben Woolverton & Anne Herlihy that pairs two of America’s most defiant political artists —Robbie Conal and Leon Golub— in a fierce defense of democracy. The Q&A with the filmmakers will be led by Alci Rengifo and Sebastian Carrasco, co-hosts of the “Breaking the 180” podcast.

Odilon Redon’s 1893 lithograph “Lumière” (Light) foreshadows the invention of cinema in 1895 by the aptly named Lumière brothers: a large-scale luminous image glows within a frame, with engaged silhouetted spectators in the foreground. We, the viewers, are double voyeurs: we watch the pondering head and feel its effect on its watchers (them and us). Both cinema and Redon’s Symbolist art share a fascination with hallucinatory images that come to life and make a lasting impression.
(“Lumière” is part of the Getty Center’s current exhibition “Odilon Redon: Otherworldly Visions.”) Highly recommended!

Santa Monica College (Santa Monica, California) -
“We couldn’t agree more with Salvador Carrasco, head of SMC’s film production program, who leads with the principle that no student should be denied an opportunity because of socioeconomic background. SMC walks the walk by charging just $46 per unit for California residents. (Non-resident pay between $398 and $416 per unit.) The campus is located near the heart of the industry, and SMC boasts an impressive record of transfers to nearby UCLA. The school offers two-year film studies and film production programs, and filmmaking students can expect hands-on experience in directing, editing, cinematography, and audio.”
