Seamester

Seamester Sea|mester offers unique study abroad adventures sailing around the globe. www.Seamester.com

Seamester offers unique educational voyages where students spend up to an entire semester at sea, sailing between countries and continents. For more than 40 years, we have consistently delivered outstanding educational experiences for students. We design our programs to provide engaging learning experiences with real outcomes in ways that are impossible to replicate in the traditional classroom. Living as part of a close-knit team on an ocean-going vessel, students learn some of the most important lessons beyond academics: teamwork, hard work, and personal responsibility. All of our students receive academic credit from the University of South Florida along with PADI scuba certifications and IYT sail certifications. Our programs are designed to challenge students to realize that it is the journey, not the destination, that matters most.

Meet Tom, one of our mates!

Born and raised in London, Tom studied at Imperial College and Southampton University and brings a background in engineering and problem-solving to every boat he leads. Having spent some time working as an engineer, he returns to the sea to help inspire others to love it as he does. Outside of Sea|mester, he works as a freelance engineer and sailing instructor, combining creativity with practical experience. Tom brings professionalism, flexibility, and a calm teaching style to every boat. With a strong background in both seamanship and mentorship, hes excited to help students build skills, grow as a team, and experience the adventure of life at sea.

Argo’s first stretch through Indonesia has taken the crew from Bali to Lombok, past a waterfall in Moyo, and into the reefs near Komodo. 🐉

Along the way, they’ve stood their first watches, taken turns at the helm, started classes and dive certifications, swum beside their new home, and discovered what’s waiting beneath the surface. 🐢🪸 Between the big moments are the ones they keep mentioning in their trip logs: music on deck, evenings together, and the friendships taking shape one day at a time.

One week in, and Argo is starting to feel like home. ⛵️

A lot can happen in Vela’s first 10 days. ⛵️

Thirty-two people met in Italy, explored Rome, learned their way around their new home, and set off across the Mediterranean together. Since then, they’ve sailed in Sardinia, hiked above the cliffs of Corsica, climbed to a lookout over Elba, and started finding their rhythm through classes, watches, shared meals, and the work that keeps a boat moving.

There’s an ocean still ahead of them, but these first days are already giving them stories to tell. 💙

Meet Natalie, one of our mates who also serves as a PADI Dive Instructor and MedPIC! 👋

Natalie spent most of her time in Illinois and Wyoming until her study abroad with Sea|mester, sailing from Antigua to Fiji in the spring of 2021. As a student on Argo, she fell in love with diving and sailing, which led her to earn professional certifications in both after completing her degrees in Environmental Sciences. Nat has taught ecology both on and off the water in California and is excited to share her passion for and knowledge of the ocean on every dive. Out of the water, she enjoys cooking, hiking, and saying hi to any animal within reach. Nat has spent the last two summers sailing with ActionQuest in the British Virgin Islands. She is thrilled to be spending back spending time on the water with Sea|mester.

Meet Annika, one of our mates!

Annika was born outside Las Vegas but has lived all around the US. She started sailing and diving aboard the Sea|mester vessel S/Y Vela in the Spring of 2022 and has been hooked ever since! Annika graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Southern California with degrees in Psychology and Environmental Studies, where she enjoyed living closer to the ocean. She has worked with yacht clubs to outfit and maintain various boats and loves sharing her passions and excitement with others on the water. Annika is also an avid diver, especially fascinated with sea slugs and kelp forests. During her summers working for ActionQuest in the British Virgin Islands, she especially loves teaching others to wakeboard, having spontaneous dance parties, and sailing, chat, and jeopardy nights. Annika is excited to sail with Sea|mester on Vela this fall.

One last landfall 🥹

Argo has officially arrived in Bali, bringing both our Fiji → Bali and Palau → Bali voyages to an end.

The final stretch brought whale sharks off Sumbawa, one last sunrise at sea, and a student-led passage that put Argo in the student’s hands, taking on the roles needed to run a 112-foot sailing vessel and bring her into Bali together. 🌅🐋🇮🇩

Then it was places to be, monkeys to see. 🐒🌴 The crew spent their final days surfing, exploring Bali, visiting Uluwatu Temple, catching a traditional fire dance, and soaking up their last bit of time together.

Another summer at sea is in the books — what a way to spend it. 🩵

The Argonauts have entered dragon territory 🐉⛵

Since leaving Raja Ampat, the crew has come face-to-face with Komodo dragons, spent an afternoon on Komodo’s iconic Pink Beach, explored unreal dive sites, completed their Rescue Diver training, and night dived under the Milky Way. 🤿🌌

They even kicked off a 4:30 AM sunrise hike with an actual earthquake beneath their feet. 🌋😳 Everyone is safe, and it definitely made for a sunrise they won’t forget.

Now the students are taking the helm for a student-led passage toward their next adventure.
