From a philosophy class paper to Oprah Daily ✍️

Zora Lee ’28 had just submitted a paper on Émilie du Châtelet’s “Discourse on Happiness” when she interviewed for a summer internship with Oprah Daily. She saw a connection between the 18th-century philosopher’s ideas and the magazine’s focus on mental health and women’s health, and decided to pitch it.

Weeks later, Zora presented the idea to the full Oprah Daily team in Manhattan. “I was able to bring my own ideas to the table, and that’s where the article came to life.”

Her resulting piece, “This Female Philosopher Penned a Recipe for Happiness, and 278 Years Later, It’s Still Relevant,” brought ideas from her Modern Philosophy course to a much wider audience. Along the way, she drew on experiences across Skidmore, including conversations in her English courses and her work as a Writing Center tutor.

For Zora, taking a chance on an idea that began in the classroom opened the door to a new interest in magazine writing.

Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times-bestselling author Geraldine Brooks and Chief of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Criminal Investigation and acting Chief Tax Compliance Officer Jarod Koopman visited Skidmore’s Arthur Zankel Music Center on Sept. 28 for a special event in which they discussed civic engagement and lifelong learning with the Class of 2030.

Brooks’ essay about Koopman, “The Cyber Sleuth,” is a chapter in the 2026 First-Year Experience (FYE) summer reading selection, “Who is Government: The Untold Story of Public Service,” edited by Michael Lewis. The book highlights the profoundly impactful yet largely invisible work of U.S. government workers.

Skidmore initiatives like the FYE summer reading program promote critical and creative thought around some of the most pressing questions faced by society and humanity today — a priority of the College’s liberal arts mission.

At Skidmore, Suzi Pond ’01 paired psychology with a self-determined major in hypertext writing, an emerging field at a time when online storytelling and coding were only beginning to take shape.

With support from Associate Professor Emeritus of English Michael Marx, she developed skills that opened doors in journalism, nonprofit communications, and eventually entrepreneurship.

“I loved that he was so supportive and allowed me to essentially create a major to not only build new skill sets but to enter new territory.”

That willingness to create her own path stayed with Suzi. About 11 years ago, she founded Redbird Media Group, a Maine-based B Corp that uses video and audio storytelling to support conservation, environmental preservation, and social impact.

Suzi returned to campus this spring to share advice with students exploring creative and meaningful careers. Her message: “Be flexible and follow what interests you.”
