🏃♀️ Explore Exercise Science at WNCC!
Interested in turning a passion for sports, fitness and wellness into a career? WNCC’s Exercise Science program gives students a foundation in health and fitness while preparing them to earn an associate degree and transfer to a four-year institution to continue their education.
Students can choose from Health & Fitness or Physical Education options and explore pathways that can lead to careers in athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, coaching, personal training, strength and conditioning, physical education and more.
One of the people helping students explore those possibilities is Doug Jones, WNCC athletic trainer and Exercise Science instructor.
A Mitchell, Nebraska, native, Jones began his career as a student trainer at Creighton University and joined WNCC in 2006. Now in his 21st year with Cougar Athletics, he splits his time between the classroom and working directly with WNCC student-athletes.
“No two days are the same,” Jones said. “Usually my day starts off with teaching classes within the Exercise Science program, and then working in the Athletic Training Room seeing a variety of athletes.”
Jones works with student-athletes on injury prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation while also coordinating medical care and serving as a first responder during practices and competitions.
For students considering Exercise Science or a related career, Jones encourages them to get firsthand experience.
“Get out and shadow someone in a field you might be interested in. Ask questions. Be curious. See if it’s what you want to do. You’ll never know if you don’t try.”
