Samantha Sonnie is having fun at her summer internship. Here's what she had to say:
***
In June of this summer, I began working as a TV Production intern at WHYY in Philadelphia. I have learned a lot so far, and have received many wonderful opportunities.
Some of the things I have done is be in the control room during the taping of one of WHYY's shows, called "You Oughta Know." In the control room, I got to speak with the show runner as well as the other crew members and run the teleprompter for the show's host. It's great to be behind the scenes and watch them put the show together.
I also have helped put together interview questions for the show's producers. I would go ahead and do research on the segment for the story, come up with questions, and send them to the producers. I have also had the opportunity to sit in on editing sessions with producers and editors, and watch them bring their stories to life. I also was able to pitch in ideas or ways they can go about editing.
I also have been logging footage for producers, in which I go through all the footage from shoots and label each clip to help the editing process be more organized.
I've also had the opportunity to work on interviews for an upcoming series on WHYY, called "The Declarations Journey" a series that will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence, coming fall 2025 to WHYY-TV 12. It's been awesome getting to be on the set while these interviews happen, as I have gotten to hear from people of diverse and educated backgrounds explain different perspectives regarding independence.
As an intern, I am also able to go out on shoots that are on location. I went on a shoot recently with a producer and the crew, in which we went to Delaware to film an upcoming segment about "Delaware Cruises" where we got to ride on a boat, interview the captain, and capture great b-roll for the episode. It was for an upcoming "Fun Things To Do This Summer" Episode for WHYY'S "You Oughta Know."
Additionally, I have been helping out with creating content for social media, and that is something that is still in the works.
So far, I have been really enjoying my time at WHYY and I cannot wait to see what I do next.
