Why SJLA? For Sofia Mastellone ’26, SJLA has been a place to ask deeper questions, challenge assumptions, and grow both inside and outside the classroom. A Psychology major from Wayne, NJ, Sofia was drawn to the program because it offered the opportunity to engage with topics often overlooked in a traditional curriculum.

Through SJLA, Sofia has strengthened her speaking, writing and critical thinking skills while learning to approach ideas from multiple perspectives. She says philosophy, in particular, has taught her that learning goes far beyond memorization. Instead, it requires students to challenge preconceived notions, think critically and connect concepts across disciplines. That mindset has influenced not only her liberal arts coursework, but also how she approaches psychology and business studies.

For Sofia, the impact of SJLA goes beyond academics. She describes the program as a deeply meaningful part of her Scranton experience and one that has allowed her to connect with ideas, classmates, and professors on a deeper level. Within the program’s supportive environment, students are encouraged to share their perspectives openly, creating a space where creativity and thoughtful discussion thrive.

The relationships she’s built through SJLA have become one of the most valuable parts of her college journey. From friendships with classmates to mentorship from professors, Sofia says the sense of community within the program has helped shape her both personally and professionally.

Sofia says SJLA has done more than broaden her education, it has helped shape the person she is today.
