🍠 Remember “Houston, we have a problem?”

A few weeks ago, I dug a sample sweet potato from our variety demonstration and was a little concerned because the roots looked tiny.

At the time, I was advised to be patient and give them more time to size up.

Well… apparently they listened. 😂

I pulled this Georgia Jet sweet potato today, and it is anything but tiny. It developed into a huge, round storage root with a long root extension that was another 7–8 inches before I accidentally popped it off.

This is exactly why we do demonstrations and why timing matters. One early sample does not always tell the whole story.

We’re comparing Georgia Jet, Beauregard, and Covington this year, and I’m getting more curious by the day to see how the final harvest compares. You can also see some shallow, winding lines on the skin. Those appear to be possible insect-feeding scars, likely from sweetpotato flea beetle larvae. The damage looks superficial, but it’s another interesting thing we’ll be watching as we harvest the different varieties.

🍠 Stay tuned — I think this demonstration may have a few more surprises for us.

🌿 Master Gardener Project Spotlight — Pioneer Village 🌿

For more than 25 years, Pioneer Village has been a treasured project of the White County Master Gardeners. Committee Chair Chuck Lang leads a truly dedicated team of volunteers who work at the village every week throughout the growing season.

The Master Gardeners maintain numerous flower beds and landscaped areas surrounding the village’s historic buildings, helping create a beautiful and welcoming setting for visitors while preserving the special character of this White County landmark.

Their many years of hard work and commitment earned Pioneer Village recognition as the 2024 Arkansas Master Gardener Project of the Year—an honor this outstanding team certainly deserves!

Thank you to Chuck and every Master Gardener who has devoted countless hours to keeping Pioneer Village beautiful. Your dedication truly shows! 🌸🌿

🎡 WHITE COUNTY FAIR—60 YEARS AGO! 🎡

Take a look at this wonderful poster advertising the 1966 White County Fair! That year’s fair was held September 13–17 and was promoted as “The Biggest County Exposition in Arkansas.”

The week included a mile-long street parade, an opening-night circus, a Grand Ole Opry spectacular, beauty revues, race track programs, carnival rides, educational and commercial exhibits, farm products—and even chances to win a boat or one of two new cars!

Here’s another sign of the times: daily admission was only 25 or 50 cents, while season tickets were $1 for students and $2 for adults.

So much has changed during the past 60 years, but the White County Fair continues to bring our community together while showcasing our youth, agriculture, talents and traditions.

Does anyone remember attending the 1966 fair—or have other old White County Fair photographs, posters or memories to share? I would love to see them!
