Sense of place means everything to us.

This basket of Lopi yarn just feels like Searsport, Maine to me…the colors, the texture, the kind of thing you’d want beside you on a foggy morning near the water.

I hope you’ll come visit us, breathe the salt air, wander a little, and maybe bring a skein home with you (so that I can make more) 😉🐏

Hope that you’re feeling the peace tonight 🫶🏻

We’re continuing our May series with Chris Toy.

Over the years, I’ve watched a lot of people arrive at workshops carrying the quiet belief that they need to already be “good at art” before they begin. Chris has a way of gently undoing that within the first hour.

A piece of driftwood.
A length of wire.
Something found along the shore.

Then slowly, through attention, balance, and a willingness to follow an idea a little further than you expected, it begins to move.

Not perfectly.
Not predictably.
But beautifully.

There’s something deeply reassuring about spending time with people who know how to work this way. Patiently. Curiously. Willing to see where a material wants to lead them.

Maybe that’s part of what Touchstones has always been about for me after all these years. Not mastery so much as traveling with intention, staying open to surprise, and letting yourself wander a little beyond the edge of what’s familiar.

This September on the coast of Maine, Chris will be teaching alongside:

Shannon Kerner
Linda Facci
Kristine Biegel
Leah Widdicombe

Five workshops. One shared week by the ocean.

If you’ve been thinking about giving yourself a few days to make things with your hands, breathe some salt air, and spend time among thoughtful people, the full workshop descriptions and schedule are linked in the bio.

I’ve been walking through exhibitions and workshops in Armenia, gathering ideas the way we all do. Slowly, piece by piece.

There’s something universal in textile work. Hands, time, patience, and a willingness to try.

It feels very close to what happens at Fiber College.

This year’s theme, coddiwomple, isn’t about wandering aimlessly. It’s about trusting the path enough to keep going.

What have you been gathering lately?

Have you ever been curious about how a piece like this actually comes together?

In Linda Facci’s Touchstones class, the focus is on working with cloth in a more dimensional way — layering, stitching, and shaping fabric so it begins to move beyond the flat surface.

This short reel shows a few of the techniques students will explore together during the retreat.

What I appreciate about Linda’s approach is how much room there is for experimentation. Small decisions — a fold, a stitch, a shift in structure — slowly begin to transform the work.

I’m curious what part of this process speaks to you most.

Sometimes the best way to understand a class is simply to hear the teacher talk about the work that excites her.

Linda Facci () recently recorded this short introduction to the class she’s preparing for the Touchstones retreat this fall.

Her work explores the sculptural possibilities of cloth — layering, stitching, and shaping textiles so they begin to take on dimensional form.

In Linda’s class, students will spend time experimenting with these ideas and discovering how small design decisions can slowly transform a piece of fabric into something unexpectedly alive.
