College of the Environment
University of Washington

Established in 1907 as one of the first natural resource programs in the country, the College of Forest Resources became the School of Forest Resources within the University of Washington's new College of the Environment on July 1, 2009. Then, the School of Forest Resources became the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences on January 1, 2012. Our vision is to provide world-class, internationa

lly recognized knowledge and leadership for environmental and natural resource issues. Our programs focus on the sustainable development of products from natural resources and the sustainable management of environments that include wilderness and park-like ecosystems, intensively managed planted forests, and urban environments. Our new name acknowledges the increasingly integrative and interdisciplinary challenges in environmental and natural resources management throughout the world, and the need to educate professionals to meet these challenges.

We interviewed John Hayes, Director of the Mount Rainier Institute, in this month’s program spotlight.

“The MRI immersive experience can have a profound impact on students, especially those who don’t have the opportunity to spend a lot of time outdoors. These immersive, multi-day overnights are not the same as just getting outside – they stretch your comfort zone and this is where the best learning happens.”

🔥 With increasing wildfire activity over the last few decades, a surprising new study led by SEFS researchers finds that contemporary fire years burn less than a quarter of the area burned on average historically in the Pacific Northwest.

🌲 Fire plays an important role in the ecosystem, maintaining forest health by promoting fire-resilient species across the landscape
🌲 Fire suppression practices became common in the 1900s, and dramatically lowered the amount of fire activity at all severity levels
🌲 Even in large wildfires, much of the area burned is likely contributing to forest restoration objectives by thinning the forest to reduce stand densities to favor larger fire-resistant trees
