UW Stroum Center for Jewish Studies The Stroum Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Washington explores the richness and creat Jackson School of International Studies.

The Stroum Center for Jewish Studies is the most comprehensive institution in the region for the academic study of Jewish life in its cultural, intellectual, religious, and international contexts. At the same time, our classes address universal questions about identity, community, and cultural adaptation over time. Students can major or minor in Jewish Studies through our home department, the Henry M. Our courses can also count towards degree requirements for other academic programs. We support graduate student research in diverse disciplines through our Graduate Fellowship. Jewish Studies courses are open to students of all backgrounds.

Join beloved instructor Gilah Kletenik for this quarter's JEW ST 145 Judaism, Religion and the Making of Meaning course. How do humans make sense of time? This spring Jewish Studies students participated in a daylong Research Symposium, presenting on a range of topics from the resiliency of today’s Jewish American teens to the history of Jewish and Muslim head coverings, and the cultural diversity of Ecuador’s Jewish small but vibrant community.

As director Noam Pianko shared, "This is what the Stroum Center does best: we support our students as they discover in the Jewish experience a lens for illuminating the broader questions they care most deeply about, across past, present, and future." It’s the early 1900’s in Craiova, Romania. The High Holy Days (Yamim Noraim) are approaching and members of Rabbi Reuven Eliyahu Israel’s congregation complain that they don't understand the prayers in Hebrew. Rabbi Israel decides to translate these prayers into a “free” (meaning more up-to-date) style of that his congregants speak. The result? “Traduksyon livre de las Poezias Ebraikas de Rosh Ashana i Kippur” a publication still used today especially by Jewish communities hailing from the island of Rhodes.
