Meet Saxton Van Dalsen, BSCS '26, a Seattle University computer science graduate whose journey to tech began with service in the U.S. Coast Guard.

At SU, Van Dalsen pursued his passion for technology through computer science, gaining experience through an internship and a senior capstone project with Amazon. Now, he’s beginning his career as a software development engineer.

Congratulations to Seattle University mathematics professor Allison Henrich on receiving the 2026 Beckenbach Book Prize from the Mathematical Association of America.

Henrich and her coauthors were recognized for "Navigating the Math Major: Charting Your Course," an accessible guide that helps undergraduate mathematics students navigate coursework, careers and opportunities in the field.

Congratulations to Dr. Braxton Cuneo, assistant professor of computer science, was recently awarded funds through the Center for Advancing the Radiation Resilience of Electronics (CARRE), a National Nuclear Security Administration-funded center based at Oregon State University (OSU).

CARRE focuses on developing modeling and simulation capability to predict and assess the radiation resiliency of electronics. The center responds to demand for the design of engineered systems operating both on earth and in space that can withstand normal and extreme radiation environments. Dr. Cuneo’s work will specifically focus on developing a framework for automatically generating hardware-specific runtimes from high-level Python simulation codes.

Funds from the CARRE sub-award will enable Dr. Cuneo to hire four undergraduate researchers per year over the five-year award, thus significantly expanding meaningful research opportunities for undergraduates in computer science.

This is Dr. Cuneo’s second National Nuclear Security Administration subaward. The first—funded through the OSU Center for Exascale Monte Carlo Neutron Transport (CEMeNT)— supported Dr. Cuneo and three undergraduate students in improving the performance of Monte Carlo Neutron Transport (MCNT) applications, a method that simulates particle interaction related to nuclear systems.

A historic new era at Seattle University is here as Maura Mast, PhD, has been named Seattle University’s 23rd President.

Dr. Mast, who was the Dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill at Fordham University from 2015-2025, will be the first woman to serve as President at Seattle University. She was chosen following a comprehensive national search and will begin her role on Sept. 1.

“I am both excited and humbled to be chosen as the 23rd President of Seattle University,” Dr. Mast says. “I have a deep respect for the university community’s commitment to transforming students through a rigorous education rooted in the Jesuit traditions of fearless inquiry, scholarship, faith, justice and innovation.”

“Our world urgently needs spaces of dialogue and discernment that actively work to heal deep divisions and build a more equitable society. Guided by our remarkable faculty and an enduring dedication to justice, Seattle University possesses the unique momentum to lead this work. We are poised for extraordinary things and I look forward to working with the entire community to elevate SU’s distinctive voice and impact.”

Dr. Mast, who was also the first woman to serve in her most recent role at Fordham, was previously a tenured professor of mathematics at UMass Boston, where she was also associate vice provost for undergraduate studies and special assistant to the provost. She earned a BA in mathematics and anthropology from the University of Notre Dame and a PhD in mathematics from the University of North Carolina.

The College of Science and Engineering and the Physics Department congratulate Assistant Teaching Professor Robin Bjorkquist on being named a 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics Laureate as part of the Fermilab team investigating the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, known as "muon g–2".

Often referred to as "the Oscars of science," the Breakthrough Prizes annually recognize major achievements in each of the areas of life sciences, mathematics and fundamental physics. This year’s Fundamental Physics prize honors decades of collaborative research conducted through experiments at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Fermilab, to which Bjorkquist contributed as a graduate student from 2011-2017.

Congratulations to Professor Bjorkquist on this outstanding international recognition!
