From blueberries to the brain, Kiera Tanaputra’s curiosity about biology and chemistry led her to pursue research as a biochemistry major at Seattle University.

A part of her studies, Tanaputra worked with Associate Professor Chris Whidbey, PhD, exploring how gut bacteria communicate with brain cells and gaining research experience that helped prepare her for graduate study. This fall, she is pursuing a master’s degree in bioengineering at Tufts University.

Seattle University continues to earn national recognition in the 2027 U.S. News & World Report undergraduate rankings. The College of Science and Engineering’s undergraduate engineering programs were ranked No. 38 nationally and No. 2 in Washington, marking the third consecutive year it has placed among the nation’s top 50. Computer science also saw a significant jump, rising 52 spots to No. 193 nationally and ranking No. 4 in Washington.

Seattle University is proud to honor the annual observance of Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month, a time that extends across September and October and coincides with the independence celebrations of several countries. More than a commemoration on the calendar, this season is an invitation to pause, listen, learn and celebrate the many ways Hispanic and Latin American communities have shaped, and continue to shape, the history, culture and future of the United States.

"I did not inherit the language of my Mexican ancestors, but I inherited everything else: resilience, determination, and a fierce belief that I belonged in rooms my ancestors never had access to," reflects Kelli Rodriguez, MBA, assistant dean for academic affairs in the Seattle University School of Law.

"Now, I carry that belief into every one of those rooms. This Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month, I’m reminded of the responsibility that comes with it: to ensure the people coming up behind me have that same permission to show up as their whole selves and know there is space for them too."

Meet Saxton Van Dalsen, BSCS '26, a Seattle University computer science graduate whose journey to tech began with service in the U.S. Coast Guard.

At SU, Van Dalsen pursued his passion for technology through computer science, gaining experience through an internship and a senior capstone project with Amazon. Now, he’s beginning his career as a software development engineer.
