Last month, Alejandro Garcia graduated from South Seattle College with a bachelor's in Sustainable Building Science Technology. In recognition of his academic excellence and dedication, he also received the President's Medal of Scholarship.

Alejandro's educational journey is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and lifelong learning. He began by completing an apprenticeship with the Cement Masons & Plasterers Training Centers of Washington and earned his associate's in Multi-Occupational Trades, and continued his academic path toward a bachelor's degree in SBST.

When reflecting on his experience in the SBST program, Alejandro shared:

Honestly, everyone helped me in some shape or form. The environment created by both the faculty and students made it easy to ask questions and clear things up when concepts felt overwhelming... Sometimes it wasn’t about giving us the answers directly, but instead helping us understand where to find them and what thought process to use to solve problems ourselves... Over time, though, I started developing a more comprehensive understanding of the material and the bigger picture of why this field matters, and that makes me proud to be part of the program... I’m excited for the future and the opportunities that are coming next. I feel like this program opened my perspective to a lot more possibilities than I originally thought were available to me... To me, graduating means more opportunities and setting a standard for my kids to meet.

Congratulations, Alejandro, on this incredible accomplishment and well-deserved recognition. We are excited to see how you continue to shape the future through your knowledge, skills, and dedication.

Proud to highlight the work of Kenneth Vicker and Vincent Horn, student interns in our SBST program. They recently completed an electrification assessment for the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity house on University of Washington Campus.

Their work will directly inform real investment decisions. They stepped into a building with aging systems and delivered:

- A clear breakdown of current conditions
- Actionable upgrade options
- Insight into funding and incentives

This work goes beyond class projects. Students did analysis for a real client, with real impact. This is the kind of work experience students in our program receive in preparation for the sustainable workforce.

This project also supports the Building Training Assessment Center (BTAC), advancing our shared goals around energy efficiency.

As we get ready to celebrate our South Seattle College BAS Sustainable Building Science Technology graduating seniors, we want to highlight some of the work they have been doing throughout their work experience practicum and internships over the last year.

LaRae is completing a hands-on internship with Rognlins Inc as a field/construction intern, gaining valuable real-world experience on an active job site. In this role, they have supported site operations by helping organize materials, assist with logistics, and contribute to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. Drawn to the opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals, they have developed skills in communication, teamwork, and coordination while gaining insight into how construction projects are executed from start to finish. The dynamic nature of the job site has made this a particularly rewarding experience, reinforcing the importance of problem-solving and collaboration in the field.

LaRae completed the Multi-Occupational Trades (MOT) associate degree from South Seattle College and continued her educational journey in the SBST program. She is now set to graduate with her bachelor’s degree next week! Congratulations, LaRae, on your dedication and success!
