SBST Senior Capstones - 2026

Over the weekend we had the privilege of celebrating our SBST seniors and the incredible work they shared through their capstone projects. Each presentation was a reminder of why this field, and the people in it, matter so much. Some highlights included:

Personal pathways into new careers - courageous stories of reinvention, persistence, and the motivation to build a more sustainable future.

A journey to new home ownership - a reminder that our personal and professional milestones often intersect in meaningful ways.

A passion for sports translated into purpose - showing how something relational, meaningful, and personal can be applied to connect communities creating a sustainable future while preserving history.

Research that leads to unexpected outcomes - because sometimes the data takes us somewhere new, opening doors to more questions and deeper exploration.

Intergenerational knowledge-sharing through video training - capturing wisdom across age groups and ensuring practical skills continue to empower others.

AI and the real impact on energy usage - tying cutting-edge technology to everyday behavior and individual responsibility. Including benchmarking, Seattle BEPS, and carbon neutrality which is showing how policy, data, and innovation can guide our path toward a decarbonized, energy‑efficient built environment.

Indoor air quality - a universal issue that affects all of us.

Graduating Sustainable Building Science Technology BAS degree at South Seattle College students will be delivering their Capstone Presentations on Saturday, March 14th!

SBST students will be sharing their research projects on topics including; an interactive dashboard that estimates annual residential electricity use based on regional building stock data and user selected home characteristics; an analysis of how Washington State’s climate goals are challenged by the rapid, opaque growth of hyperscale data centers; a study examining how everyday residential activities influence indoor air quality more strongly than ventilation standards alone; an evaluation of automated railcar indexing at AGP’s Aberdeen facility showing improved safety, efficiency, and throughput; research demonstrating how dedicated bathroom makeup air pathways enhance contaminant control and exhaust fan performance; and a standards based decision framework designed to help homeowners, especially women and first time buyers, navigate residential decarbonization with clarity, consistency, and confidence.

This time of year, we’re lucky if it’s not raining which means our students are out completing building assessments and even rocking out on the roofs! A group of SBST students from South Seattle College recently completed a site visit as part of their group project. Their hard work culminates in presentations happening this weekend!

This quarter our juniors and emerging seniors will be presenting in-depth recommendations and application of real-world skills in developing sustainable building solutions with presentations focused on four areas of interest:

Post Occupancy Evaluation
Building Science Smackdown
