Join us TOMORROW, October 22nd for our 2026 Breysse Lecture!

When it comes to workplace hazards, Dr. Robert Harrison is like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson put together. As clinical professor at UCSF and a public health medical officer with the California Department of Public Health, he has helped uncover connections between many occupational exposures and cases of serious injury, illness or death.

Dr. Harrison gives the Breysse Lecture tomorrow, Oct. 22 at 12:30 pm, with reception to follow. There’s still time to RSVP for in-person or Zoom options: deohs.washington.edu/breysse-lecture

This summer, Environmental Public Health major Lauren Costa helped protect hearing for military aircraft mechanics as an intern with The Boeing Company Defense, Space & Security:

"What surprised me most about the F-15EX specifically is that it is primarily made by hand, unlike commercial aircrafts also built by Boeing. So, the mechanics are drilling every bolt by hand, painting the ship by hand; it is incredible work they do day in and day out."

It was powerful knowing I was helping them so that when they get to be 70 years old, they will still be able to hear their grandchildren talking to them, and music on the radio."

Animal keepers and support workers at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo ensure the animals stay safe and healthy, but they also face health and safety risks of their own. As the zoo’s first health and safety program manager, DEOHS alum Orhan Eribac helps keep the keepers safe — from preventing run-ins with teeth, claws and beaks to everyday slips, trips and falls.

This summer, Eribac welcomed DEOHS students Asher Maier and Casey Olmstead to join his team as interns. Meanwhile, another DEOHS student, Kristin Choe, interned on the zoo’s sustainability team.

Choe helped with the zoo's browse program, which collects trimmings from local gardens and parks to help supplement the animals’ diets. She found that the zoo is saving half a million dollars a year through these green donations from Seattle Parks and Recreation and Seattle Department of Transportation alone.

It’s ! Did you know that your bike could be a valuable tool in responding to an earthquake or other disaster?

This summer, 40+ cyclists gathered at Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park to use regular and cargo bikes to complete tasks that might be needed in earthquake response, as part of the Seattle Disaster Relief Trial.

The event was led by University of Washington Department of Urban Design and Planning and UVA School of Architecture faculty member Katie Idziorek, with support from DEOHS and University of Washington College of Built Environments faculty member Andy Dannenberg, University of Washington Earth and Space Sciences research scientist Elizabeth Davis, and others.

“Bicycles can be useful in disaster response and their use should be incorporated into disaster response plans but seldom is,” Dannenberg said.

Check out a new study by Dannenberg and colleagues at the link in our bio, showing how bikes have been used in disasters and exploring case studies including the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan; 2012’s Hurricane Sandy in NY/NJ; and the 2017 Mexico City earthquake.
