Teaching has been a part of Kristen Childress’ life throughout her career as a nurse. In community college, she taught GED courses and tutored students in the sciences. In nursing school, she took classes she knew would benefit her as a future nursing instructor and talked to her instructors about wanting to teach.

“It’s just always been a core part of who I am and what I love to do."

Kristen Childress is a nurse practitioner, nurse educator, and co-director of the UW Palliative Care Certificate. She was recently recognized for her work teaching at the UW School of Nursing with the 2026 Sandra Eyres Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award.

The center was proud to award PhD student Charles Kwanin a travel scholarship to present his research on older adults and digital health at Sigma's International Nursing Research Congress in Toronto.

"My research challenges the idea that digital exclusion is simply a consequence of aging," says Kwanin. "Instead, the findings suggest that the divide can be linked to how particular technologies are designed and used. Age-equitable digital health is achievable.:
