This spring, ME students showcased solutions to challenging problems at the department's capstone expo. Students worked with partners from industry, nonprofit organizations, community groups and faculty research labs to ensure their projects were relevant to the real world.

One team designed, fabricated and assembled a wind tunnel to study the spread of wildfires in the western U.S. Gabi Laurenz (’26 BSME) says the project was the highlight of her undergraduate education in ME.

“We learned that solving engineering problems requires not only technical ability but also effective communication, collaboration and adaptability,” she says.

Congratulations to the student teams who showcased their posters, prototypes, exhibits and demos at the recent 2026 Mechanical Engineering Capstone Expo! The projects highlighted our graduating students' dedication, collaboration and ability to solve real-world problems. Projects included using micro-data centers to decarbonize Seattle, redesigning a pool-accessible wheelchair, creating a next-generation surgical cart and making recyclable composite prostheses.

Thank you to our industry partners, nonprofit organizations, community groups and faculty research labs for providing valuable mentorship, project sponsorship and feedback.

Last week, thousands of elementary and middle school students from across Washington state arrived at the UW Seattle campus to explore more than 100 hands-on engineering activities and demonstrations. Thank you to the ME students, researchers, student groups, and RSOs for being part of it!

The Neuromechanics & Mobility Lab and the Powers Lab showcased how engineers use biomechanics to improve health and well-being by studying movement and forces in humans and cells; the Polagye Lab had hands-on activities to explore how engineers measure underwater noise; and the CAMP-PhyRE Group demonstrated the science of flow and combustion. Boeing Advanced Research Collaboration at UW had robots on display to show how the “see” and interact with the world.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at UW helped students build their own mini catapult. ME-affiliated clubs with demonstrations or activities at the event included Advanced Robotics at the University of Washington, UW ASHRAE Student Chapter, E-Truck at UW, UWashington Formula Motorsports, UWHPS - University of Washington Human Powered Submarine, Husky ADAPT, Husky Robotics, the Solar Vehicle Team at UW, and Washington Superbike.
