Last month at the National Nordic Museum, the Nordic Innovation Series: Designing Better Cities brought together some truly incredible speakers, including a few familiar UW alumni!

Seeing how design, sustainability, and community intersect on a global scale is always inspiring. Visitors were also amazed by the students’ sketchbooks from Zahra Rasti’s class for the Architecture in Finland study abroad program.

Huge congratulations to UW Architecture lecturer and M.Arch alum Chad Robertson and Emily Robertson as their firm, Seahaus, was selected as a one of the seven winners in the Washington Starter Home Plan’s Townhouse Design Competition!

Selected from 30 submittals across the state, the winning Seahaus entry explores a modular, prefabricated housing system centered on a compact, 948 sq ft two-bedroom townhouse design.

As these designs move into the next phase with Civic Commons to develop pre-approved plan sets, they bring us one step closer to making starter housing more attainable, efficient, and sustainable across Washington State!

On July 17, members of the Architecture staff (along with our chair, Rick Mohler) enjoyed our annual field trip. This fun summer event was instigated by CBE HR Administrator Shanna Sukol when she was with the department, and it has been going for 19-20 years now!

Past destinations have included:
- Seattle Waterfront: Market Overlook (Miller Hull) + Aquarium Ocean Pavilion (LMN) + Ferry Terminal (NBBJ + Populus Hotel (Miller Hull)
- Federal Center South (Oxbow) (ZGF)
- Walking tour of Georgetown neighborhood
- Gates Foundation
- Walking tour of South Lake Union led by a Seattle Architectural Foundation tour guide
- Center for Wood Boats + MOHAI
- Seattle Art Museum & John Grade “Middle Fork” exhibit
- Sharon Sutton Exhibit + ferry ride to West Seattle for lunch at Marination Ma Kai
- Burke Museum in construction

This year, we were honored to have a guided tour of iconic Seattle projects engineered by UW BA Arch alum Jay Taylor of MKA as our tour guide.

Jay led us through the Amazon Spheres, the Olympic Sculpture Park, and finally the flagship Central Library, explaining the challenges, intricacies and triumphs of each project.

We have an exciting new student group! Public Speaking in the Built Environments (PSBE)

Dedicated to strengthening verbal communication and public speaking skills for all CBE students. PSBE is a space to practice public speaking — a skill essential to every CBE major. Many students struggle to effectively communicate their ideas during high pressure moments: final presentations, crits, juries, and group leadership. PSBE is a place to develop their those skills, learn from professionals, and prepare for a career where how you speak about your work is just as important as the work itself.
