A recent UW study found that past emissions from the top oil, gas, coal and cement producers will continue impacting the environment for decades. These emissions can make future climate disasters and extreme weather events more likely due to global warming.

From October 28-30, scientists from around the world will convene in Seattle for the inaugural Global eDNA Conference.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is trace genetic material that organisms leave behind in their environment, which can help with natural resource management such as detecting endangered or invasive species, evaluating restoration activities and more.

UW professors Shana Hirsch and Ryan Kelly in the UW School of Marine and Environmental Affairs spearheaded the conference, which is co-hosted by the Marine Technology Society’s eDNA Committee and UW’s eDNA Collaborative.

“I’m really hopeful that a culture of collaboration continues to grow. I think this is already a very collaborative field, so I’m confident that this conference will help keep up the momentum.” - Prof. Shana Hirsch

Prof. Tim Billo teaches the widely popular environmental studies class about the natural history of the Puget Sound. As part of the course, students go on field trips across western and central Washington to apply the skills they learned while appreciating the beauty of each landscape. Co-instructors from the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe also share their knowledge of native practices and stewardship of the land.

It’s never too late to make dreams come true! Last month, we were honored to work with Wish of a Lifetime to fulfill Edwyna’s lifelong dream of being a marine scientist. She joined a one-day research cruise aboard the R/V Rachel Carson with Oceanography at the University of Washington, testing water samples and examining phytoplankton under the microscope.
