RIDE Preceptor Calibration 2026 was a success! Each year, our dedicated RIDE clinical preceptors from rural and underserved communities across Washington come together in Spokane to prepare for the upcoming clinical rotations, strengthen their mentorship of RIDE students, and participate in continuing education.

This year, we celebrated several important milestones for the RIDE program, including adding five new RIDE clinical sites and successfully sending 16 RIDE students on their RUOP rotations. Additionally, RIDE students treated 3,159 patients and completed 4,303 clinical procedures during their 2026 rotations.

Looking forward to having 32 first- and second-year RIDE students in Spokane!

Applications for UW Dental Dawgs are now open!

Formerly known as Dental Academy, Dental Dawgs is a free, hands-on program for Washington high school students interested in exploring dentistry and other oral health careers.

Selected students will join us in person at the University of Washington Seattle campus to explore careers in dentistry and oral health, gain practical experience, and connect with UW dental students and faculty.

A special thank you to our UW School of Dentistry RIDE student volunteers, faculty, staff, and partners who helped bring the first Eastern Washington UW Dental Academy program to life. We are also incredibly grateful to Santiago Valdez from the Washington State Dental Hygiene Association and Stacie from RIDE for their invaluable support and contributions to this event. This past weekend, the Office of Educational Partnerships hosted the inaugural Eastern Washington UW Dental Academy at the UW-GU Health Partnership Building in Spokane!

High school students from across Eastern Washington joined for a full day of exploring careers in oral health. Through hands-on activities, students gained an inside look at dentistry while learning about the many educational and career pathways available across the oral health field.

The OEP team, along with five amazing UW dental student volunteers, had a fantastic time at UDOC last week, leading hands-on dental activities for an enthusiastic group of high school juniors.

This year, students had the opportunity to practice administering local anesthesia, scaling teeth, fill cavities, and place orthodontic brackets on dental models while learning about careers in dentistry and developing new clinical skills!

Welcome, RIDE Class of 2030!

Earlier this week, we kicked off the new academic year by welcoming the newest cohort of 16 RIDE students at our annual welcome picnic. It was wonderful to bring together students, faculty, staff, and alumni to celebrate the beginning of their dental school journey and welcome them to the RIDE community.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Sangeetha Nedunchezhian on her new role as Seattle RIDE Clinical Director!

Since joining the RIDE program as the Restorative Liaison in 2022, Dr. Nedunchezhian has worked closely with RIDE students during their time on the Seattle campus, advocating for their needs and providing guidance and support to help them successfully complete their program requirements.

We are excited to see her step into this leadership role and look forward to her continued dedication to the RIDE community. Congratulations, Dr. Nedunchezhian.

On Saturday, June 27, UWSOD partnered with Floss Boss Cares and King County Public Health for a community outreach event in Kent. Together, 12 students and one faculty member from the Equity and Access to Oral Health Care course volunteered to provide care for 17 patients, offering dental exams, fillings, extractions, and cleanings. Proud to support initiatives that expand access to oral health care and strengthen the health of our communities!

Last week, part of the Regional Affairs team took a trip to beautiful Missoula, MT to lead a dental session with the AHEC Medstart Camp. Students got to learn how to suture a banana, do a composite filling, test their indirect vision with a mirror maze, and compete in a soap carving competition.

The cycle of RIDE’s impact 🦷🪥

RIDE puts budding dentists out into community health clinics during their first years through the RUOP program.

Then, in their fourth year, students return back to the same community health clinics for a five month extended rotation.

Once the students have graduated and begin leading clinics of their own, they then take on a first-year RIDE student as an assistant to renew the cycle 🔁
