⭐ Meet Yazmin Ramos, a '26-27 Education Abroad Scholarship Recipient!

I am Yazmin Ramos, a first-generation Hispanic student who is originally from Colorado. Ever since I was young, I have always had big dreams, and due to my ambition, one of my main goals has been to become a polyglot. Right now, I am fluent in both English and Spanish, currently in the process of learning French, and from there, I would love to continue. This all started because I have been working in restaurants from a very young age; one of my jobs in particular has a J-1 program where students from all over the world come and get to experience a new way of living. I have met some of my best friends through this program. People from Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Spain, Peru, and Argentina. I quickly realized that we all have our own traditions, values, and beliefs, and I loved learning about them. We would share stories of our lives, and through this experience, I learned so much about the world. This is why I chose this program. I cannot wait to be able to say I am fluent in not only French but in a variety of different languages and be able to visit places I am so curious about.

⭐ Meet Harleen Kaur, a '26-27 Education Abroad Scholarship Recipient!

My name is Harleen Kaur. This is my first year at SU, and I am in my junior year of nursing school. I've always wanted to study abroad, so when I found the Summer UCOR program in Spain and Morocco that fit my schedule, I knew I had to do it. I am looking forward to meeting new people and immersing myself in the cultures of my host countries. I have never been to Morocco or Spain, so I'm excited to see what they have to offer and get to experience education in different countries.

Hi! My name is Tsion Tesfaye, and this summer, I have the exciting opportunity to study abroad in Morocco and Spain through the UCOR abroad program with IES. A little bit more about me, I am currently double majoring in International Studies and Political Science on the Pre-Law track, with a Minor in African/African American Studies. Hello! My name is Quinton Kuhn and I am heading into my Senior year majoring in music at Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University in Fall 2027. I have been playing violin since I was seven years old, inspired by my sister. I'm studying abroad in Vienna, Austria during the summer of 2026 through the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) and participating in the Vienna Music - Performance and History program. Lastly, we have some advice from Global Ambassador Paige Wilson, who studied abroad in Cusco, Peru and Alicante, Spain!

1. What do you miss most about your time abroad?
I miss the other students in my program, Spanish language immersion, and the lower financial cost of daily life.

2. What advice would you give to students currently preparing for departure?
Pack less than what you're planning on & maximize solo travel/doing things by yourself!

Whether you're familiar with your host country's culture or not, there are a few things to keep in mind when aiming for cultural immersion:

1. Participate in local activities: Join cooking classes, attend festivals, and take part in traditions to gain firsthand insight into cultural values and practices.

2. Utilize public transportation: Explore all parts of your host city while still mingling with the locals! Take the time to learn which lines and routes will be most convenient for you.

3. Explore beyond the city center: Take day trips to nearby towns and sights to experience the broader country's culture, not only your host city.

4. Eat and shop locally: Skip the chains that you can get at home! Support small businesses and enjoy authentic, local cuisine.

Next up, we have some advice from peer Advisor Tristan Huerta, who studied in Lisbon, Portugal!

1. What do you miss most about your time abroad?
The ability to explore a new country and immerse myself with the culture. I miss the 25 cent shots of espresso that were offered in my apartment building. I miss the friends I made while abroad, the surf trips, the train rides, the countless pictures taken, and just the ease I felt of being able to learn and try something new every day.

2. What advice would you give to students currently preparing for departure?
Embrace all the feelings, don't try to not acknowledge them. Try everything you can, try new foods, walk a different route to and from school every day, say yes to random adventures with friends, and do things alone!! Showing yourself that you are capable of being alone, and still having a great time, is definitely a main outcome of my time abroad. Lastly, if you have any uncertainty, have a friend with you, and you two can share a 'scary' experience together.
