Honor the Past. Empower the Present. โœŠ๐Ÿพโœจ

Juneteenth marks a powerful moment in history- June 19, 1865- when enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after emancipation was declared. Itโ€™s a day of reflection, celebration, and continued commitment to equity.

At South Seattle College, we center Juneteenth as a time for awareness and empowerment: honoring resilience, uplifting Black voices, and coming together as a community.

Today, we celebrate through conversation and connection. Letโ€™s learn from the past, reflect on the present, and continue building a more equitable future, together.

Yesterday was a special day on campus. We celebrated the service of our colleagues- some of them working at South for 35 years!

All told, the staff and faculty who were celebrated have a combined 650 years of service!

That is something we are otterly proud of!

Special thanks to South's president, Dr. Monica Brown and Seattle Colleges District Chancellor Rosie for bookending a fun event of celebration and acknowledgement of our incredible Otter colleagues!
