The Office of Undergraduate Research has formally launched a professional development series for mentors (including faculty, graduate students, post-docs, and staff) of undergraduate researchers which will be offered during the 2026-27 academic year. The series will include three in-person workshops aimed at promoting more equitable and inclusive research mentorship practices. Session titles are listed below:

Session 1: Bringing an Equity Lens to Your Mentorship Practice
Session 2: Cultivating Belonging & Inclusion in Research Spaces
Session 3: Balancing Student Advocacy & Empowerment

Spaces are limited and sessions filled up quickly during our pilot series, so we encourage you to RSVP to reserve your spot.

Recognition for completion: Mentors who complete all three workshop sessions will receive digital and printed certificates and will be formally recognized on our website for having completed the training series.

Join GSEE and Graduate Student Affairs (GSA) for our new collaborative community building event: Community Connections! Community Connections is our signature community-building event for new and returning grad students. Designed to bring first-gen students and students from diverse perspectives and experiences together across disciplines, this is a welcoming space to meet peers, make new connections, and strengthen your sense of community.

On Day 1, students can tune into a Virtual Student Panel on Zoom. This space will be for our graduate students to learn tips, tricks, and recommendations for succeeding in graduate school from continuing students.

On Day 2, we will hold our In-Person Reception for all new and returning graduate students. Come as you are. Invite other graduate students from your department or come solo and enjoy the company of your fellow graduate community. There will be food, crafts, a photobooth, and a dance floor!

The Office of Graduate Student Equity & Excellence (GSEE) and the Center for Communication, Difference & Equity (CCDE) are co-hosting Coffee Connections. This is a space for students to drop in, unwind, grab some refreshments, and connect with community over art and creativity. Our October event is the first of the year! Students are welcome to bring their personal crafts or games to play solo or in community over snacks. We will also have puzzles and a paint by number available.

Call for Proposals: Scholars’ Studio

Are you a grad student who wants to perfect your presentation skills for a general audience? Submit a proposal to give a 5-min. low stakes and fun lightning talk about your capstone, research, or pedagogy! Scholars’ Studio is an opportunity to practice communicating your work in front of a supportive, general audience — without using a lot of technical or academic jargon. This event is a collaboration of the UW Libraries Research Commons and Graduate Student Affairs in The Graduate School.
