The Kurt Grinnell Indigenous Aquaculture Scholarship is currently accepting applications for their upcoming award cycle. This Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships to Indigenous persons interested in pursuing educational opportunities in aquaculture, fisheries science and management or natural resource management. Priority is given to students with a demonstrated interest in aquaculture The KGASF was formed in honor of the late Kurt Grinnell a Native American leader who was deeply involved in Washington State's aquaculture industry.
To qualify for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be an enrolled member of a Tribe or First Nation, or a member of a Métis, Inuit, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian group.
- Be currently enrolled to study at a university, community college, technical, or trade institution.
- Be pursuing (or planning to pursue) a degree or certificate focused on aquaculture, fisheries, natural resource management, or a closely related field.
- Priority is given to students or prospective students who demonstrate a strong, interest in aquaculture.
This foundation honors the legacy of the late Kurt Grinnell, a member of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe and a proud descendant of Chief Chetzemoka. Kurt was a passionate advocate for Tribal food security and sovereignty, recognizing that aquaculture – whether finfish, shellfish, or plants – is vital to the cultural and economic future of many Tribes and First Nations.
