School of Psychology, Family, and Community presents: Sleep in Children with Special Needs

All children are most likely to reach their full neurodevelopmental potential when starting each day after a night of sufficient and good quality sleep. However, ideal sleep is a complex state, the paradigm of which is being challenged by our modern world, and even more so by those with underlying developmental disabilities who struggle to succeed in the world. Thus, topics for this talk include: (1) basic physiology of sleep, (2) assessment of pediatric sleep and its disorders, (3) known sequelae of sleep disorders in typically developing children, and (4) sleep disorders in children with special needs.

About our Speaker:
Maida Lynn Chen, MD, is director of the Pediatric Sleep Center and attending physician at Seattle Children's Hospital and assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She earned her MD at Northwestern University and completed a pediatrics residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. She completed her pediatric pulmonary fellowship at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, with special focus on respiratory control and sleep medicine. Her clinical interests center on sleep disorders in infants, children and adolescents. Her research interests focus on respiratory control disorders and sleep-disordered breathing in special-needs populations, including those with fetal alcohol syndrome, obesity and craniofacial anomalies. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Thoracic Society, American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society.
