Congratulations to Yvonne Guan, a third-year undergraduate student majoring in chemistry with a minor in applied mathematics, for receiving the Julia Ann Rutherford Scholarship from the American Chemical Society, Puget Sound Section.
Yvonne conducts research in the Vaughan Group, where she applies novel labeling chemistry and microscopy techniques to investigate diverse biological systems. Her work spans multiple scales, from sub-nuclear epigenetic organization to inter-cellular arrangements in tissue slices and entire organs. She integrates these imaging approaches with quantitative geometric analyses to characterize the structures of interest and to gain insights into the underlying biological processes (epigenetic inheritance, kidney urine filtration and concentration, te**is spermatogenesis). After graduation, she plans to pursue a PhD in biophysics.
ACS CARES FOR NEW SCIENTISTS: STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Did you know that the Puget Sound Section Education Committee receives about one third of the local section's annual budget? This is about $14,000. The committee offers grants to K-12 educators and to the chemistry student clubs. Every year the committee also selects 5 outstanding students to receive $2,000 (each) scholarships. The three scholarship categories are:
John Macklin scholarship (diversity, equity and inclusion) in honor of Dr John Macklin, the first African American Professor at the University of Washington.
Bill Wasserman scholarship for students at a 2-year institution in honor of long-term ACS local leader and faculty at Central Community College.
Julia Rutherford scholarship for students at a 4-year institution in honor of the late Julia Rutherford, a talented chemistry student at Pacific Lutheran University.
