To help, a University of Washington program called Pathways 2 Safety equips behavioral health providers and their patients who are fi***rm owners with tools to protect themselves during moments of crisis.

In this new episode of Health Cascades, Kelsey Conrick, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington Center for Fi***rm Injury Prevention, joins us to talk about the demand for Pathways 2 Safety and plans to expand it across the country.

When it comes to workplace hazards, Dr. Robert Harrison is like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson put together. Throughout his career, he has helped uncover connections between many occupational exposures and cases of serious injury, illness or death.

On Oct. 22, Harrison will deliver the 2026 Breysse Memorial Lecture: “From surveillance to prevention: Interdisciplinary strategies for occupational health and safety.”

After struggling for decades with either suboptimal, slow or expensive molecular tools, the field of tuberculosis is finally entering a new era. This breakthrough, the Pluslife MiniDock Ultra, allows for rapid testing in primary care settings using sputum or tongue swabs, addressing the 2.4 million undiagnosed TB cases annually.

To get to this point of WHO approval, test manufacturers, funders, test evaluators, and regulators played a critical role. Jerry Cangelosi, professor emeritus of UW School of Public Health, was among those who played a key role in the early development of a TB test using oral swabs.

When Madison Leon pitched a project to interview rural Washington gun owners about how they store their fi***rms, she expected to spend a lot of time earning trust as an outsider. What she found instead surprised her: doors opened almost immediately.

Leon recently graduated from the UW School of Public Health's Community-Oriented Public Health Practice program. Her capstone was to design and test new safe-storage messaging specifically for rural Washington communities, where gun ownership rates are higher and public health messengers are often viewed with more skepticism. Here, she shares the biggest takeaway to her conversations with rural communities.

A new review led by Karen Levy at the UW School of Public Health highlights how climate change is reshaping waterborne disease risks around the world.

Warmer temperatures may increase bacterial infections like cholera and Salmonella, while some viral illnesses could become less common. Extreme weather, from floods to droughts, is creating new challenges for water safety and public health.
