Seattle University is preparing to transition from a quarter system to a unified semester calendar beginning with the 2027 academic year, creating more time for students to engage meaningfully with community partners, connect classroom learning with real-world experience and deepen their impact across Seattle.

Community engagement is central to Seattle University’s mission and the student experience. Through the Seattle University Sundborg Center for Community Engagement (CCE), students learn with “one foot on campus and one foot in the neighborhood,” connecting coursework with local organizations, schools and nonprofits. As Seattle University moves from quarters to semesters, CCE sees a clear win—more time for students to build trust, contribute meaningfully and connect classroom learning with neighborhood priorities. The shift also gives community partners longer commitments and a more reliable rhythm for planning.

“Under the quarter system, some organizations have not wanted to partner with SU because of the short duration of student engagement,” says CCE Executive Director Kent Koth. “As we shift to the semester system, we anticipate that additional organizations will be open to becoming partners, which will offer students more expansive learning opportunities and enable the university to make an even greater positive impact in Seattle.”

This summer, 14 Seattle University students conducted research on Blakley Island in the San Juan Islands related to marine ecology and conservation biology as part of a partnership between Seattle Pacific University and SU that goes back four decades.

One student who participated in this research was Katie Kaisaki, who took a class focused on the five types of marine habitats in the San Juan islands: Tide pools, boulder beaches, mudflats, seagrass beds and offshore sampling. Kaisaki’s research focused on different aspects of the environment such as prey, predators and hiding spaces, wanting to find the relationship between the number and sizes of Dungeness crabs found on the north and south end of Blakely Island.

“I was able to experience what a day-in-the-life is like for a marine ecologist and it gave me an incredible sense of what that area of work would be like,” Kaisaki says. “With my major in chemistry, I feel like it’s broadened my horizon toward classes that could relate both chemistry and marine ecology together.”

Meet ROTC leader and nursing graduate Zoe Adler 👋

A native of Long Beach, California, Adler wanted to be a firefighter from an early age, then pivoted to both firefighter and paramedic. In high school, she watched a “60 Minutes” documentary about Navy nurses doing humanitarian work and a spark was lit.

While at SU Adler served in Seattle University Army ROTC as Brady Battalion Commander as well as operations manager, Ranger Challenge Team Captain and a go-to mentor for young cadets. Adler was also involved in The Mosaic Center Seattle University as a community ambassador to help transfer, commuter, veteran and military students feel welcome and included on campus. Post-graduation Adler was commissioned as an Army nurse focusing on critical care, with a long-term goal of becoming a pediatric nurse.

“Trying to help build the next generation is important to me,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to be helpful and directly impact people. I want to serve others. Seattle University, especially nursing school, has taught me to look at people as a whole person and provide care and support not just by checking blood pressure but also being aware of mental impacts, family impacts, social impacts. That’s something I’ll carry with me into the future.”
